Computing Affectations?

Recommended Posts

I was just looking at a couple of threads and something reminded me of one of my earlier days on the internet, I remember browsing the Winamp forums and there was a guy on there that insulted anyone that used a mouse to use their computer. He would only use his keyboard and tab everywhere, and he called people 'mouse pussies' on many occasions. To me it sounds utterly ridiculous but I assume it wasn't just him.. I bet there were many of those anti-mouse people. :p

Which made me think, do you have any computer related affectations? As in, is there anything you do regularly which seems a bit odd to most people and it's something people will instantly notice if they're watching you?

The thing I do is I tend to launch Windows stuff through the run dialog like if I want to go to device manager I'll hit Win+R and run devmgmt.msc for example.

Still... after that point I would use the mouse to use the Device Manager. >.>...

Long ago when the first mice with scroll wheels started showing up I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. Why would you want a wheel on your mouse? I think I even actively avoided them for a short while but I finally relented and got one. Seems really stupid now, there's no way I could get by without a scroll wheel.

I also launch some programs from the run dialog. My friend once pointed out to me that I always open the calculator app by going to run and typing calc instead of just clicking on the shortcut. For almost all other programs I always click on the shortcut icons so it's just a habit I guess. I also don't use the Win key because I don't have one; none of my keyboards ever have. Even if I'm working with a computer that has one I'll still use alternate shortcuts like ctrl+esc to open the Start menu because those are the shortcuts I'm familiar with. While the main reason is my preference for classic mechanical keyboards like the Model M I'm sure my infuriating experiences in the early Windows 95 days of gaming had something to do with it also. Who hasn't hit the Win key by accident and been knocked out of a fullscreen game, or worse having it crash?

I still use the winkey+r dialog also, never use the pinned apps or start menu / screen.

I'm using Terminal.app rather than the OS X finder for most file operations.

To be fair without cut and paste in Finder Terminal.app is better at file operations :P

I have a habit of selecting the text as I go along when I am reading by clicking and dragging the mouse.

A few people have pointed it out to me asking what I am doing

I find I do that too on large chunks of text, helps me not to loose where I am.
