Following the conclusion of the third series earlier this year, Cross announced plans to "wrap up" the cult hit and develop a spinoff movie.

Idris Elba, who stars as the titular DCI John Luther, said that he would not rule out a fourth series as he is "very loyal" to the audience.

However, Elba later admitted that the third series would probably mark the end of Luther's television run.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Cross confirmed that the show is "finished" on television.

When asked about its future, Cross replied: "There is none.

"The show's finished. Idris, as he should be, he's gone on to be a big movie star."

However, Cross did confirm plans for a film based on the drama, adding: "I think there will be a Luther movie - that's the plan."

Elba has rapidly risen to stardom in Hollywood following his turns in The Wire and Luther, starring in blockbusters including Thor, Prometheus and Pacific Rim.

He is also due to play Nelson Mandela in biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Cross said: "Because I love Idris, I think, 'Oh my God, you're playing Mandela. That's such a big thing. Oh Christ, I hope it goes well.' But I watched the trailer a couple of weeks ago and it's astonishing.

"He's a great actor - because he's so beautiful and charismatic and because he commands the screen so singularly, people forget he's a f**king astonishing actor. I can't think of a more high profile, risky role to play than Mandela. He's owned it."

Cross also teased future projects, including an NBC series which begins shooting next month and plans for a new UK show.

"Exactly what it is, I've got a few ideas," he added.

It's a shame but the delays between series have been too disruptive anyway.  It was comically unrealistic at times but it was a great program.

I heard about this for some time, decided to get series 1 to 3 and watched it all over a weekend and wow, just amazing, Idris Elba is one talented actor in this and also in what films he does. I hope for a 4th series or a film.

A movie sounds good. At least that's something.
