aco Veteran Posted January 24, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 24, 2002 Here is the link MxxCon is referring to: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/ho...y/choosing2.asp If you're on planning on sharing the internet over a large LAN, go for Pro, but if not Home will be fine. :)

Home is just fine for Gaming, MP3's, Networking and MS Office. Plus it's cheaper ;-) I really haven't seen major differences to be honest ... Home should do ya fine ... -JJ:P
Tim W
Most of the extra features in Pro are completely irrelevant to people who are not running large networks or multiple users. If this is you, go for Home, no question. The only feature I can see in Pro that might be worth having is Remote Desktop, and for the money, other programs like pcAnywhere will probably do this job a lot better. If you do have a family of multiple users, Home allows no customisation of user priviledges (other than simply selecting either "Administrator" or "Limited" for each, so that's slightly annoying since you can't define what "Limited" means. I have a feeling Pro allows more customisation ... not sure though. It certainly has more user types, at least.
Krome
Too bad the Pro does not have a Domain Controller... or else it will be awesome...

Nidonocu
What I want to know is why MS have taken so long to release the .net Server O/S's after the workstation software. They released 2000 Pro, Server, Adv Server and Datacenter all at the same time didn't they?
StimpyX
Nidonocu: DataCenter was released several months after 2000 Pro and the Server sets. I would note that previously Microsoft's NT group (when there was an NT group) would have been focused on a *suite* of business-oriented OS products. With XP there's a small change, in that the consumer and business OS were blended together, but there is still apparently a demand at Microsoft of the two being handled as separate products requiring management on different timetables. With that in mind, the split between release schedules for the consumer and business lines of the OS should be understandable -- if still annoying. Nidonocu
okay thanks fo that StimpyX, just a thought, has anyone ever tried to run DataCenter on a normal computer with Hi Specs, or is that not possible? But possibly funny...;)

Aah ffs!!!! you guys seem to have missed the fact that winXP is effectively just a home user update to win2k. THATS why the current server product is win2k AS. Because its the same, just with out the GUI enhancements, and multimedia apps!!!!! Jeez use ur heads! Jon
