For some reason I can never max out my download rates without using a download manager.

More "schtuff" I don't understand why people run. Unless you're downloading the entire Internet, why do download rates matter?

When downloading a large file the difference between 500kb and 2,000kb per sec is noticeable

I'm constantly downloading large TIFF files daily... They take their time, but I could care less about pushing to the max. All browsers have downloaders built in...

but when I use the Internet download manager I max out my download speeds. it's the difference between two mins in 10 minutes so why not use it

My "Must haves" (apps I have that I think all people should have) are pretty limited:

Chrome

Firefox

Winrar

Media Player Classic Homecinema

Of course, then there's the software *I* always must have:

Adobe suite (Photoshop/bridge/premiere)

3ds Max

Ventrilo

Hexchat

Steam

Truecrypt

Synctoy

Notepad++

Hostr windows widget

Dropbox

Steam

..I guess that about covers it.

Because when I can download two movie files totaling close to 3 gigs in less than 10 mins it doesn't matter at all, I don't think I've downloaded any single thing that has taken over 10 mins to complete, didn't even take notice what their downloa rates were, just downloaded them and got on with it

I literally just upgraded to Windows 8 one week ago tonight. I also just installed the last app I consider as being essential about 4 hours ago for what I use my PC for.

Since it is so fresh in my head, these are the apps I need in order to play PC games and use my PC as a movie streaming server.

They are as follows (and I am going to try and even remember the order):

  • WinRar
  • Logitech Control Center
  • Nvidia Drivers & GeForce Experience
  • Creative Drivers and Sound Blaster Control Panel
  • Chrome
  • EVGA Precision X
  • Riva Tuner
  • HP Printer Software for OfficeJet Premium 6700
  • VLC Media Player
  • Quick Par
  • Newsbin Pro
  • Universal Media Server
  • ConvertXToDVD
(my preferred application for making DVD movie disks for my parents to watch)
  • Steam Client
  • Origin Client
    - Installed The Battlefield 4 Beta
  • Punkbuster Manual Updater
