\\Coroner//
OK big deal so he is trying to fix his public image. If by chance he had not ended up looking like that much of a pile of sh*te in the public eye do you really think he would still be doing the same? Do not misunderstand I do think that its good he has done this.

So you personnally know Mr Gates as being a selfish person? Your presumptions are unfounded. Besides, if I had that kind of money, I would do the same thing, not for my public image, but to satisfy myself in knowing that I have helped people, perhaps saved them. I'm pretty sure his motivation is the same.

I'm pretty sure his motivation is the same. Its not him as a person that is my problem as I stated I think it's good that he is doing this. My problem is the fact that corporate america decides to rape its employees by the CEO or whoever is at the top getting 10x what the lowest man under him is paid. This process is just wrong. You can say "if I had that kind of money..." all you want to but wake up and realize how many more that are unlike him, assuming I am completely wrong (which is entirely possible), that will scrounge and hoarde their dough and never give to anyone but family. The majority of the filthy stinkin rich are not like him that way. Where is the balance? Why is it justified that the man at the top deserves to rape his own people like that? noir
Aren't these donations to non-profit organisations tax deductible, so if he didn't give the money away he'd have to pay it in taxes anyway?
ANDYLOGO
Just to let you guys know: He plans to give his children $10 million each when he dies and the rest to go to charities. He knows that $10 million is enough money to make sure his children and grandchildren are taken care of. Also he has always given money to charity even before he became a multi billionaire. Hawkeye
I can't believe it giving away 23 Billion!? Must seem like a lot, huh? I mean, who in their right mind would give away over 50% of the money they have, right? Think of it this way. According to Forbes Magazine, he was worth $40.7 billion this year. That still leaves him with $17.7 billion theoretically. Now here's the big question. What can you do with $40 billion that you can't do with $17 billion? ;) The answer, almost nothing. $17 billion is still enough for 99.9% of the people on the planet to do whatever they want, and still have most of the money left over. Movie stars are merely millionaires compared to Gates, and can almost be considered "poor" relative to the amount that he has, and yet they still live lives that most of us can only dream of. Hope that puts it in perspective for you. ;)
altezza Veteran Posted November 21, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 21, 2003 Wow that's a lot of money he gave away. Even that accounts more than a half of his fortune Gates will still get more to his fortune through the MS itself and the shares.
.Kompressor
the fact of the matter is....the guy gives it to a good cause. so give the man some credit when it's due! I'm sure there's other's who don't give much....and in the multi-millions and billions also. if he gave away 98% of his wealth would you be happy? nutternutin
Giving away money is a common practice amoung US corporations. It actually lowers your tax liability, so giving away the money saves you money in the long run. Being how he is the richest man in the world, he has to give away more for the credit. All corporations do it, it is not because he has a good heart, it is all about the bottom line, as usual.
Emon
If I had that much of money .. I wouldn't give away a penny ... guess thats why I don't have that much of money
EzeWong
I don't think you guys understand that 23 million is a very small percentage of his earnings, Let's say he is AT LEAST 2 billion (And that's streching it.) Well then thats only 10% of his earnings, thats not really all that much. Plus he gets a tax break for giving to charity, A BIG tax break. Anyways think about it this way, if you had 2 billion dollars you would have so much money you wouldn't know what to do with it. It's not like you would want ANOHTER mansion, there is only so many mansions you want before you don't care. Eveyone knows he is the richest man in the US, so why would he need to show anyone or buy anything pretentious? I'm not saying he is a bad guy, but from his position that would be like us giving away 100 dollars
aldo
lol, ezewong: he's worth about $50billion - and he gave away $23billion. I'm sure he might of done this for that warm fuzzy feeling, but it will be mainly tax breaks and PR. If anyone knows much about this, Gates has a PR team which organizes these big charity donations... they organize it so they donate say $2billion in quick sucession, then sumbit stories to all the newspapers etc about it. By donating a lot in quick sucession it makes him look like he's constantly donating that sort of money, but it's usually only once every year that he makes a big donation. Drov
In my opinion, it's great to give, but to give quietly. If you give in a "high profile" kind of way as the Forbes article stated that Gates did, it just makes me wonder if he's giving for the right reasons. But one could say, "At least he's giving."
