DocM
So, this idiot turns a possible 3-10 years into a life sentence (or worse if he resists arrest.) Also, Sheriff Napoleon (who runs the jail) is one of the 2 remaining candidates who will face off for Mayor of Detroit in November. http://detnews.com/topstories/article?a=2013309090053&f=1207 Detroit -- A prisoner linked to a notorious carjacking crew escaped the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice after police said he stabbed a sheriff's deputy Monday morning with a plastic shank, prompting a several-hour evacuation of the building and a massive manhunt on the city's east side near Belle Isle. The suspect was seen leaving the property with a sheriff's uniform before 8:30 a.m. Monday, moments before carjacking a woman. Police Chief James Craig later identified the suspect as 25-year-old Abraham Pearson (also known as Derreck White, Weezy and D.C.), who is 5-foot-6 and 157 pounds and had been in custody on carjacking charges. Dozens of officers, SWAT members and dog handlers are methodically searching the east side of Detroit. "We completed a grid search of this area, and we're starting on another area," said Assistant Police Chief Eric Ewing, referring to an area near Belle Isle, after noon. "Homeland Security airships aided in the search and will be back after they refuel. "The dogs are still tracking a scent right now. Several scents have gone cold but the dogs have also picked up other scents." Craig added Pearson is a member of the "Hot Boyz" carjacking gang and has a "Hot Boyz" tattoo. At a 1:30 p.m. conference, law enforcement officials said officers were also searching near downtown and in the area of Clay Street and I-75. Pearson has a twin brother whom police were trying to contact. "We have several leads and information we are following," Ewing said during the briefing on East Jefferson across from Belle Isle. As he spoke, helicopters flew overheard in a search of nearby areas. Ewing was joined by Deputy Chief Mike Jaafar of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, who said an investigation into how Pearson escaped ws underway. He said the shank, believed to be a plastic comb, was recovered. Pearson was thought to be wearing a white T-shirt, tan sheriff's deputy pants with a brown stripe on the side and, underneath, green prison pants with a white stripe on the side. He has a tattoo on his left arm that reads "Hot Boyz." The injured deputy, Harrison Tolliver, 63, was taken to Detroit Receiving with non-life-threatening injuries. Jaafar said the deputy "is in good spirits." Tolliver, a retired Detroit police officer, joined the sheriff's office last December. Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon said Tolliver suffered puncture wounds to the neck after being stabbed several times by a comb that was sharpened at one end by the prisoner. According to a sheriff's news release, the the attack occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on the seventh floor of the building near a holding cell, where Pearson and two other inmates had been transferred from the Wayne County Jail. Pearson handcuffed the deputy, then took his uniform, cellphone and radio. The other two inmates did not intervene or leave the cell, police said. "Once they arrive at the holding cell, the cuffs are removed and they are placed in the cell. Deputy Tolliver had removed the cuffs off two of the prisoners who went into the cell," Napoleon said. "When he removed Pearson's handcuffs is when he was attacked." Afterward, Pearson -- wearing the deputy's stolen uniform -- escaped from the rear of the building and carjacked a Dodge minivan near Macomb and Beaubien; the vehicle was involved in a non-injury crash at E. Jefferson and Concord. The deputy's uniform was found under a vehicle near 1300 Beaubien. "We are in the process of tracking this prisoner now," Napoleon said. "(The suspect) just overpowered the deputy." Napoleon said he would prefer to have more than one deputy on duty to handle multiple prisoners but the department's budget doesn't allow it. "We don't have the money," he said. >
Growled Member Posted September 10, 2013 Member Share Posted September 10, 2013 If Detroit police are as inept as most other police, and I have no reason to believe any different, then the suspect will probably get away.

DocM
WOULD YOU BELIEVE - the guys lawyer is laying the grounds for an insanity defense, claiming the perp couldn't recognize him and just stared blankly at a wall. The usual BS. Thing is in Michigan there is the possibility of being found "Guilty, But Insane" - so he could still get life without parole but with mental treatment. Once he's deemed OK by the shrinks it's back to a high security prison instead of being released.
