Apple has big plans for its M7 dedicated motion co-processor

While the iPhone 5s?s 64-bit A7 processor has received the lion?s share of attention, 9to5Mac points out that we should take a look at the device?s M7 dedicated motion co-processor as well. As Apple describes it, the M7 is technology that ?knows when you?re walking, running, or even driving? and can do things like automatically switch the type of directions it gives you when you stop driving and start walking.
 
9to5Mac?s sources say that Apple is planning to do a lot more with this, however, and is working to integrate it into iOS Maps so that it can mark your parked car?s location and help you find it in a crowded parking lot if you get lost. The M7 is also designed to take advantage of several new features Apple is planning for iOS Maps, including indoor mapping and public transit information, 9to5Mac?s sources say.

They're linking it to maps?

 

So, your car will be 2 miles from where the phone think it is.  If you're cycling, it'll switch to car mode, in a car, it'll swap to airplane mode, and on foot it'll think you've gone for a swim. :p

Again these features will be useless in 90% of the world. Another US & UK exclusive.

 

Bear in mind that in a lot of the world, Apple (and others), don't have the data availability that these new features would enable.  They can hardly give you internal mapping features if they don't have, or aren't allowed to get, the data for it, can you?  Such as StreetView in Germany, for example...

 

The US and UK are just dumb to let these corps have that data in the first place. :p

Not to this extent.  This is a dedicated processor that uses very little battery life.  Nike is already coming out with an app to fully utilize it.  I wouldn't necessarily call it revolutionary but there's a lot of possibilities with it.

yeah there are already exercise apps that use GPS to determine not only your track but the amount of steps, speed and all; of course these ones are a bit unreliable since they rely on GPS and don't have a sensor and coprocessor to correctly determinate your exact movements (running, walking, driving, etc.). This new coprocessor will enable more accuracy on this kind of apps.
