American Dialect

Recommended Posts

The following seems the dialect of Brooklyn, does "Fuggadaboudit! " mean "Forget about it!"? And what does "Dontcha" mean?

Mr. Rock - Fuggadaboudit! It will take more than a cockamamie Math teacher to scare I. Hey, I'm from Brooklyn, the only place where people talk good. Dontcha know!

Thank you in advance.

Hey, that reminds me of that parody on the "goin back to Cali" song that Colin Quinn did way back.

:&: I'm goin back to Brooklyn...Brooklyn...Brooklyn

Bah! I've lived in Brooklyn (7 years) and currently live in Staten Island, and I hear "Fuhgetahaboutit" all the time! As bangbang has already said, it is more reserved for the Italian community. Like, when you hear somebody say "I'm a New Yohka (I'm a New Yorker)", you can sure as hell bet that they have some Italian in them. ;)

Living in Staten Island, you get to hear the traditional New York City accent quite a bit. :)

It's nice really. I can't picture myself living anywhere else. While most people would never, ever identify me as being from New York (I don't have a very localized accent), most would pick me as being from the Northeast, which is still accurate.

As for the Neowin NYC meeting, that could possibly work out, as I'm sure we have at least a few dozen members from that area.
