vcfan
steam is very popular on the pc. "shows slide with amount of users". today we'd like to introduce the steambox platform, open to any oem to build a gaming console. we are bringing Linux gaming into the livingroom. (paid audience members go wild). id like to bring out a special partner who will be making the very first set of steamboxes. "company rep steps on stage". we know gamers love steam,so we are introducing the very first steambox called OUHNO. you are going to love this. It runs on an AMD APU capable of stunning HD Graphics. You can pre order yours for only $399. "cue light flashes and crowd goes wild". One more thing. Heres an exclusive title only available on the steambox platform. "Universe collapses". Athernar
If you're really saying I did the same he did, then you're either being purposely dense, or you're just trying to make me look bad. as I said, there's a mile of difference between criticism of a product and how they're doing it, and nitpicking minor details (repeatedly in every thread that mentions xbox i might add) and making them out to be humongous issues. Last I checked your scenarios has happened extremely frequently, and no, I have never been the first to rant or rave, and don't do either but try to counter with actual arguments. you should try it sometimes. There isn't a single bit of difference, criticism is criticism and this is a discussion forum. You just can't hack it when Microsoft is the target of that criticism, you dish it out but can't take it. It's called practicing what you preach. Nagisan
Well....this happened: http://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1mu7a6/it_happened_xpost_from_rsteam/ For those that don't click on the link, basically a Valve employees twitter background has a hidden image that is a graph of particle decay half life. Now, that doesn't mean for sure that another Half Life is coming, but considering Valve loves their ARGs and this particular one points to a graph of actual half life, this could get extremely interesting. Current theory is part of this 3-part announcement will be Half Life 3 announced as a launch title for Steambox.
Chicane-UK Veteran Posted September 21, 2013 Veteran Share Posted September 21, 2013 Exciting stuff - possible Half Life 3 (after so darn long) and of course something to further shake up and add competition to the console market. It's all good as far as I'm concerned! :)

ILikeTobacco
Assuming I can play my existing library, I may be interested. They need to give something that makes it better for me to use than my existing PC.

chaos mage
Steambox could be interesting if it has a point (and isn't Linux) but unless they blow the X1/PS4 out of the water I don't see the point. I'm interested in it in a general sense, but I'm not interested in Valve lately...they went from overdelivering on engine features with Half-Life 2 and HDR and engine features/upgrades and all that to underdelivering on the same. Steam is good, but unless they really have something amazing up their sleeve I just don't really like them anymore otherwise.

That's how I feel about Steambox, it will be nice for people who want to play their games on their TV and with a controller. But I don't see it really competing heavily with Xbox 1 or PS4, that's what normal PCs are for. I too am a bit disappointed (same as virtually every other Source-engine fan is) with the slow progress of the next Source engine or upgrades to the current Source engine. They took a lot of development time away from their game department to focus on Steambox and as such they haven't put out many games compared to when they started out in the industry. I mean look at how rapidly they pushed out some games back when they started, from 1998 to 2008 they pushed out 22 titles. Not all were full game releases in terms of a new IP or anything (like HL2 Ep 1 and 2), but they were still major releases. As of right now, they have had 5 releases in the past 5 years....less than half the speed that they pushed out new content before because a lot of focus has gone to Steambox, something I personally have no interest in and will not as long as I have a PC. Development of Source hasn't really slowed down, rather Valve stopped using a central engine for their releases and started developing in branches with Left 4 Dead onwards. If you look at Valve's company site they have a publications section with presentations and papers on various new techniques used in the various branches.
