What do you want to see in the next release of Windows?

Well, real or not, something similar to that is what we all have to look forward to if we upgrade to the latest of Microsoft Windows.

BTW, I agree 100% on the vector idea. As a matter of fact, I think that a new rendering engine similar to the quartz (but not entirely identical to quartz) should be in the next version of Windows. It would actually outperform quartz and make it look ugly at the same time (if that is is possible).

GDI+ is already capable of 99% of what Quartz is, MS just don't insist on giving every single window transparent bits and drop shadows where it isn't necessary.

What I would like to see most from windows is the ability to customize WHATEVER you want on your own, I know thats asking alot, but they tend to keep us shackled in alot of ways :( Even taunt us at times :disappoin

You've got to be glad MS doesn't bundle AOL in Windows anymore :). And since AOL just sued MS, that should make them farther apart.

As for the rounded taskbar, I'm not exactly sure what you mean... could you make a pic that showcases it?

Okay lets kick this off by those people who are saying they want it to take less ram and less disk space, umm sorry aint going to happen, why??? you say

- Computers are getting more advanced and affordable almost daily, now my machine being a P4, and alot of other things could run 100 versions of XP, and still have enough room to run Return to Wolfestein, on all the best graphics.

The fact is that for MS to release something truly awe inspiring will take alot of system resources, well for the ppl who are sooking about memory and disk space anyway.

But yes, Everything needs to be customised. As MS would have seen ppl wanted better customisation so they broke the theming engine so we could make our own. Now theres hundreds out there, ms would be aware of this.

But features wise, Graphics customisation are a given, they need some new and well pretty much dazzling otherwise comps are gonna get more advanced and ppl will be buying Software that simply cant and doesnt use the most out of the hardware.

Would be like buying a P42.2GHZ to run Win95.

Also Security, I want to be able to Lock folders or permit other local accounts or other ppl as u sers on the pc from accessing folders, theres 3rd party apps that dop this but it should be a built in feature. Apart from that MS, just Dazzle me with brand spanking new Interface.

I want all of the above. One thing though.

We have these new digital channels in town and the cable company allows us the choice of a basic system with numerous options and packages on top. I want windows to be somewhat the same. I want to be able to purchase the basic version with out even a calculator included and choose freeware, shareware or boxed versions of everything else. I think a copy of windows in this manner would sell for less than $50 (full version). If I require one of MS's extras, then I can take that. I would only hope that they would be a decent value.

What i'd like to see in the next version of windows, is animated icons like in desktopX !!! Obviously you can desactivate it if you like. But an icon that change its shape when you get the mouse over it, i found it really cool...

the next windows must have a really clean interface, with no big shapes like in the luna interface... maybe no border, like the windows here:

And, please, i'd like them to put the button to stop the computer on the desktop. It's stupid the put "start" when you want to stop...

A great thing will be a lighter os. They always include a lot of things that nobody ever use. The top is with windows XP. 1,5 GB !!! And you can't even choose what tou want to install !!!

There must be a light install, with just the operating system, and no gadgets...:D

1.) Built-In Resource Hacker * Hex Editor under Start > Accessories > System Tools

2.) A full.src.zip included on the CD.

3.) Custom install options BEFORE the OS has been installed.

4.) Removal of all links included into the layout of the OS for third party apps or specials offered by MS or business partners(including IE).

5.) A better DOS.

7.) Skinnable msstyle support included with editor.

8.) Disable built-in firewall.

9.) A better disk defragmenter with better scheduling options.

10.) Customization regarding colors/fonts used in the BSOD.

11.) Built in Unix API layer.

12.) Genie effect using the taskbar.

13.) Transparency settings built into the control panel.

14.) MSVD support for dual monitors, with newer and more enhanced features.

15.) NEW VERSION OF NOTEPAD!

21.) FREE TECH SUPPORT 24/7 so you can call them and whine about stuff on a boring night.

22.) Last but not least, a new logo that does not involve the ever so recognized windows flag.

I quite like the Avatars. Especially the water drop one.

Anyway you sook about greater customiation, doesnt mean there going to include everything under the sun in it. Greater customisation referrs to the ability to change settings etc, well last time I checked you could change your Avatar, so stop sooking about it open up paintshop or photoshop and make ya own.

Also whats the crap disable built in firewall, the option not to use it is there.

And Better DOS. last time I checked we were advancing into the future and I highly doubt improving DOS will be on there agenda.

Osiris: My remark wqas regarding the OS as an entity to the world...Your grandparents or the hooker next door more than likely do not know how to make their own avatar at th size required, not how to go about applying that avatar. Mine is customzed with a shot of my head grinning. ;D The point I was making was that MS starts to impliment this avatar feature for the users, and the avatars that comes default with it are ugly and lame (wtf is up with the damn frog?!?!??!?!?). The norm of people, especially older adults always want the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method applied to all popular technology. On another note, YAY MS getting sued on 7 accounts of breaking antitrust laws by AOL & Netscape! Yay we can wait a couple years and see what happens! It's the OJ Simpson of the tech-world...

alright that may be the case that some people may not know how to make avatars but the fact is that MS dont have to put everything under the sun into the bloody feature, but hell people can learn just as easy, dont have to have a degree to resize an image.

Its not good Microsoft is being sued, that would be like suing Bill Gates because hes rich and cause hes rich others are poor. Netscapes dieing and loosing severly to IE, and there trying to cash in on wehatever they can its a pathetic attempt and the only ones who will benefit are the lawyers.

You must be one of the Microsoft or nothing fans...Yes, MS may have good features..Then again, that is most likely what you have been using your entire life. Winamp is not the only MP3 player, Windows is not the only OS, and the reason I say this is because hardware/software industries that take over the market are breaking the antitrust laws. If they want to compete in a 'fair' manner, then that is fine. But anyone who understands this type of situation knows that for years Microsoft has lied and made their own set of laws and have gotten away with all of them. Daily you see microsoft whining and complaining and supporting the FBI in everything from software piracy to security issues. They are what is considered 'the rich spoiled brat' in technology. They always complain about everything they don't like and they will get their way because they have money, and unfortunately, in a country such as the US, you have to buy your freedom. The person or corporation with the most money will win, no matter who is actually right. Microsoft from day one has planned on dominating the world market in OS technology and now even Home Entertainment Systems! That is the dumbest thing to arrive on the market since Brail on ATM Machines! This country is in more trouble than Michael Jackson with an ass full of tinker toys and Microsoft is more out of control than a retard in a room full of bouncy balls. Even though it is AOL doing it, something needs to be done about Microsoft. They make a great OS for the norm, but 97% should not be the norm! They leave no space for innovation and improvement on the OS itself. Until MS lightens up and changes certain things, I will never buy or support anything they produce. Everyone needs to read slashdot.org everyone once in awhile and see what people who actually care about our security and technology related future have to say. I hope MS fries...Then again, I don't want AOL & Time Warner taking their place. MS needs to tone it down and allow room and innovation for other people's ideas.

no.. it wasn't real.. there aren't any screenshots of BlackComb or LongHorn since it hasn't been developed yet. That infamous "BlackComb" video we all saw is nothing more than Windows XP modified to show what could be instore when MS and MSN integrates :) That's all it was there's no screenshots of blackcomb or longhorn yet.. anyone you see is a fake made by someone in Photoshop or some other program... i gotta say that.. MS should take a look at some of them.. Cuz some of them look good! :)

As for new features... i think you guys got it all covered. All i gotta say is that you can't want alot of something for nothing.. hense getting more features and customizations gonna take more space to pack so that ain't gonna happen. Shipping 2 vesions (lite and full) is just gonna cost more money and us "advanced" users only count for like MAYBE 20% of the MS market. The rest of slow pokes and newbies that don't know a computer from their butt so taking out all of that stuff would be devastating to biz. The reason all this stuff is there is because people obviously wanting it there so that's that. Oh.. and something i found extremely funny?

I'd like to see that animated icon too... but that's all i can think of for now?

/. is a n excellent source for anyone with a normal human brain to go and read about techie stuff. It is not completely ant-MS. It just believes in supporting the 'enforcement' of the law regarding antitrust...People have a right to their opinion, and in today's society, mostly every opinion you hear from anyone is exactly what you see in the media and what they support. The media...MSNBC? lol I stand no chance arguing with you people in this thread because most of you have no clue on even how to install OpenBSD. ;x But, all I am trying to get at, is that if MS really wants to not receive negative feedback and lawsuits, they should actually take some time to listen to what people have to say regarding the OS. Anything to be a true success needs to offer interaction with the user in all areas. My family and friends call me daily 'how do i fix this?' 'how do I do that?' 'dude, ms update screwed my config up with faulty drivers, please help!' 'My AOL DSL modem is not working on windows XP, please come over and fix it' the list could go on for pages and pages....Me being the tech geek of this small community kind of makes me a local MS tech support. I enjoy the cash tips I receive and all, but it ges old. Notive when you go over your 'Even Viewer' and find any errors or warnings, try clicking on finding help or support for that specific entry. After some lag, it will bring up MS Help/Support and say there is currently no support for this feature..blah blah. The least they could do is get some people off of their twinkie eating - coffee inhaling asses and create COMPLETE help and support for the basic list of issues before releasing the final OS release to the public. Also, making sure the Plug'n'Play feature is secure before releasing1 I've got work to do. So i'm not gonna blab on. Just take a close look without the 'I <3 MS' state of mind.

That was my opinion....Notepad has been the same since Win95. They need to add more support for opening certain file types with correct formatting. Also, maybe a skinnable feature, a tabbed feature, and a foreground/background color selection. ;D Even syntax highlighting plugin support would be cool...Call me crazy. ;D

uhh.. i think Wordpad i can do that but i always uninstall that. I use Word XP/2002 and i think it comes with those features... wait a min.. let me check....

tic, toc, tic toc....

ka-chinG! :) I was right.. it does come with it! hehe.. Then most of you say you want the OS smaller? That's extra weight on the OS that's not needed... alot of features where it's not needed, frankly.. isn't needed. Anyways.. a total update of all the features of the OS would be nice but then again not practical. The extra work would make it more expensive and because most of us "get it as a gift" that's only small percent of us and majority of people wouldn't bother getting an upgrade or newer OS. Think biz people.. but yeah.. i'm not bashing anyone.. i would like those features too!

Hi all .

Well , i also agree with the icons stuff , and customization of windows to happen more easy.

Anyway, the most important thing for me, its not the way it looks ., but more the way it works.

A more stable ( yes i hope m$ can do it better ) get rid of the BSOD,give the user more control of what really is happening in the OS, how many users haven't experienced some kind of application crashing , taking with it, all the other applications running ? or when u try to close an "hanging" application , but it doesnt close.... well i could keep on .. but just to point out some.

Another thing is the tweaks that we, users, tend to find some time after the Os has been released to the public.

Why haven't Microsoft , in some way, included the possibility of doing that without the need for us , to mess with the registry all the time ?

If some of the "tweaks" are proven to give a performance "boost" wouldnt it be smart to change the OS that way before it went final version ?

"Yeah yeah , the standard user , bla bla bla .. "

The standard user, wants an efficient , stable OS, yes and fast as well.

It would be a dream to get a version of windows , wich you wouldnt need to change "pages" of registry settings just to make the os more responsive, faster internet, faster OS , better / faster something else....

I also would like to add , Security!

Windows , like the name says , its a "window" to the world , and its open ...

So , more stable and more secure OS its the prime wish for me.

Ikaro.
