V-Tech
Sony unveils bevy of Walkman devices, puts premium on hi-res audio playback If you prefer Walkman hardware instead of its app incarnation, Sony's got a fleet of new models for you to consider. Headlining the new gadgets are the ZX1 and F880 series, which boast a 1GHz dual-core processor, 854 ? 480 touch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, an "S-Master HX" digital amp and high-res audio playback (192kHz/24bit) in AIFF, ALAC, FLAC and WAV. Since they both run full-fledged Android 4.1, the mobile players have access to Google Play and can run games and other apps. A silver ZX1 will hit Japanese shelves on December 7th with 128GB of storage in tow, and set audiophiles back the princely sum of 75,000 yen, or roughly $760. The F880 line will arrive in the manufacturer's homeland in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options -- each available in black, blue, pink or white -- priced at 27,000, 30,000 and 40,000 yen (in the neighborhood of $273, $304 and $405), respectively. Sony's positioned the new S series Walkmans as its battery life-conscious option, as it squeezes out about 77 hours of music playback with a 320 ? 240 LCD and up to 32GB of space. Endurance music listeners will be able to snag the device for as little 18,000 yen (approximately $182) come October 19th. Also available alongside the marathon-minded portables is the E line of players, which has just 4GB of storage and starts at 11,000 yen (around $111). The M series packs 16GB worth of tunes in a tube-like form factor, and it'll be available December 7th 18,000 yen, or roughly $182. Finally, the Walkman parade is rounded out with an update to its waterproof in-ear Bluetooth headphones, doubling capacity to 8GB. When October 19th rolls around, the water-friendly cans will go for 15,000 yen (or around $152). There's no word on when the barrage of new products will make it stateside, but you can dive into the source for more in the meantime. http://www.engadget.com/2013/09/25/sony-unveils-bevy-of-walkman-devices/

I'm looking for a new MP3 player, will take a look at these :) I think I've missed them so far. What I can come up with is while doing sports? Better than a 5inch smartphone juggling in your pocket but that's about it. Kids with proper parents. Don't really know how is it relevant when it costs 100 bucks while a very low end phone which can also play mp3's costs the same.
Arceles
This is the reason because I'm no longer interested in smartphones, this pretty much does exactly the same, plus a HUGE improvement on audio. It may not have a camera, but then again I already have my QX100.... (Note I already preordered mine since almost last month, it's actually quite a bargain). Also Sony Dedicated Media Player >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any cellphone out there (Audio Quality) Specs: for those interested http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://www.sony.jp/CorporateCruise/Press/201309/13-0925B/&usg=ALkJrhgA2lwyP9OTdgvr96qn_z47A4ITGQ Platform Android ? 4.1 Processor OMAP ? 4 Coretex-A9 dual core 1.0GHz Main memory 1.0GB Display 4.0 type, TFT color LCD, FWVGA (854 ? 480 dots) birds ? Luminous display for mobile optimistic contrast panel Touch panel ? Bluetooth ? Ver3.0 A2DP/AVRCP/OPP/HID Bluetooth ? standards NFC ? GPS ? G-sensor Nothing really great, but again, this is a media device with full dedicated Audio Circuitry.
Lamp0
Why would someone actually need a dedicated mp3 player these days? Having a dedicated device for music isn't that odd if you listen to alot of music. Battery life & audio quaility are legit reasons I think. There are also lots of times I don't care to have my phone with me, or on.

Proper parents means you don't give your kids a phone. And in the same line, not everybody needs a phone/smartphone. Dedicated MP3 player tend to sound better because they are using better hardware. Batterie time is also better since you don't have to juice up the 3G/4G/LTE radio. Even if I have a Galaxy S3, I also have my iPod. Sound better, last longer and I'm not disturbed by anything. Alwaysonacoffebreak
Proper parents means you don't give your kids a phone. Thats a bit harsh don't you think. I can name 10's of censorious where a phone would be useful to reach your child. Proper parents keep their balance in check tho. But alright, now I understand the use of mp3 players :)
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted September 25, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted September 25, 2013 Reasons I have for my dedicated MP3 player: * I don't take my phone on holiday * Better battery life * Better sound quality * Greater storage * Specific use when in the UK (stays in glovebox plugged into stereo) * Cheaper device I am less likely to care about using So, yeah, thanks for asking the same tired old question and this going off-topic. Raa
I'm always going to associate "Walkman" with a portable cassette player. Coagulated and Kreuger 2 Share
blerk
Proper parents means you don't give your kids a phone. Anybody under age 15 in my opinion has no need for a smartphone. However I think they should have a nice, simple, dumbphone that can send texts and make calls (and receive them obviously :p ) is all that is necessary in my opinion. About the only smartphone feature that I can think of that would be nice on any phone, including cheap ones would be something where you can wipe and track the phone remotely. Over 15 - any phone is fine really. +Dick Montage 1 Share
JustGeorge
Why would someone actually need a dedicated mp3 player these days? I don't like strapping my Lumia 920 on my back when I go to the gym for starters. Also not keen on sweating all over something as important as my smartphone, either. Coagulated
Why would someone actually need a dedicated mp3 player these days? Storage and laziness. I've got an 8GB iPhone 4 which struggles to function properly when it fills to around 5-6GB mark, and it always requires me to constantly shuffle the tracks I've got on there if I want to add new ones. Thus, I use my 160gb iPod Classic as my main device for music and don't ever have to muck about or worry that if I add this album or that album my device will suffer immensely.
