im looking into getting a student credit card

im a freshman in college and need it just so that i could use it in emergencies so it doesnt have to have a high spending limit

i dont work as of now due to a ****ty schedule, i dunno how much of a prob that would be for getting a student credit card, but i am planning to work next semester.

anyone know of any good ones? any students in here with credit cards? what do you use?

whichever card you get, just make sure you don't carry it with you. leave it at home along with your social security card and you won't have to worry about credit card theft OR identity theft.

I have a bank account where my parents do back home and I signed up for one and got a Visa with a $500 spending limit. I know it's not much, but it sure has kept me out of debt at times. I would tell you to check with your parents and see what kinds of deals your family bank has going.

Also, on a sidenote, never sign up for a credit card on or off campus to get something free. Even if you sign up and throw all of it away when you get it, it still hurts your credit rating as never using a credit card hurts your ratings. If you are in dire need of getting the free item, use a fake name.

$200-300 is enough for me

Umm I've never heard of not using your credit card as "hurting" your credit. No credit stays no credit.

AND Don't use a fake name no matter what. Application fraud to these institutions (especially big ones) can be pretty detrimental since they have your address (assuming you want the gift) and that's if somehow you happened to bypass the first security check which is the proper SSN linked to a name.

My advise is to think about it this way. Even though you say you don't want to use it much that's fine. Use it as a tool. Don't keep it in your home w/ your SS Card. Carry it with you.

For small purchases just go ahead and use your hard. BUT be careful on your spending limit. Don't use the card as a way to buy everything you want.

Use it to buy groceries or like movie tickets, etc (and trust me by your junior year you'll probably live in an apartment and would want to use the CC).

Use this little method as a way to build your credit.

MAKE SURE TO PAY ALL YOUR BILLS ENTIRELY.

This way you'll have a good credit in the long run and use that rating to help you buy cars/houses or whatever in the future.

This is parental advise and if you choose, you can listen.

Many banks offer student cards. Citi bank/ Bankone/ and also Capital One (non bank). Look out for APR BUT if you pay all your charges every month then the APR is nothing to worry about.

You should check with your and/or ur parents bank. they usually have some options for students. I have a Check Card(debit card) and a Credit Card(Secured Visa). I mostly use the Check card since its directly linked to my checking account so i know my limits and i can use it anywhere since its a visa card too.

I made a Secured visa credit card with the same bank but dont use it that often. Its for ppl who dont have credit or have bad credit so they can build credit. basically u give them a certain ammount and that ammount will be ur credit line(usually 250 or 500 min) and after a year they give back u the money and u have a credit history.

don't bother if you can't pay the minimum monthly payment. if you miss more than 2 payments in a row your credit rating gets shot to hell and it'll take 7 years for it go back to normal. yeah, they're pretty nasty :/

i'm freshmen in college and i haven't thought about credit card yet.

currently i'm using a debit card. its good enough and it seems like you only get $500 spending limit if you get a credit card now, which isn't much. debit card keeps me in check (well somewhat, spent $200 on myself this week). i would get a credit card for big purchases (over $500), otherwise debit card should be good enough. you can use it online just like a credit card (diff being you have to have the money to begin w/, but thats a good thing for anything under $500). its something to consider in addition to credit card imo. you should be able to get it for free from your bank.

For better or worse, you shouldn't have much problem getting a credit card as a student (especially through various offers on campus).

Watch whatever interest rate you get, pay off the whole balance monthly whenever you use it, and be *real* careful not to get yourself in long-term trouble.

Those interest rates can make debt start mounting quickly if you only do minimum payments.

If you *really* only need something for emergencies and don't care about building credit now and the like, you can probably just get one of your parents to have a card issued to you as an authorized user on their account.

Of course, they still get the bills and you get little or no credit history of your own, but such a setup might help you resist the periodic temptation of using something in a non-emergency manner and keep you out of trouble until you get better accustomed to your student budget.

I have one like that.

It makes billing easier because they pay it. Hassle-free for me.

Instead of using my money to buy school supplies and stuff, I save it for future use.

It helps to have a card like mine.
