PC won't boot - No video, no beep, but fans spin

Recommended Posts

What you claim is not what I experienced. Somehow, when my video was out of sync, the BIOS hung without any indicators especially no Windows Chime. Usually rebooting and turning off and then on the monitor at EXACTLY the right time during boot, remedied the problem and everything would work again as intended. It was a Dell Trinitron Monitor and an nVidia graphics card in a Dell system if I recall correctly. Sometimes demagnitizing helped me get just the right timeing.

As others have indicated, likely a graphics card issue, especially if it's an nvidia chip as indicated in the wiki.

Another thing to check, especially with Dells, is for bad capacitors. Look at every capacitor on the motherboard and check that they haven't burst. I had this happen to over 150 Dell Optiplex GX520 units. Had to threaten Dell that we were moving to HP to get them to 'admit' there was an issue, and they fixed all 150+ units. Poor Dell onsite tech, horrible job!

Not only GX models have had this issue, so have SX260s, 270 & SX280s, and lately Vostro 220s/230s have had leaking or bulging caps also. the brown gunk is the Electrolyte leaking from them. When they start to bulge/leak varying voltages they regulate will fluctuate.

this could explain why it doesn't post.

Hey,

Small update..I'm here, looking at the PC.

I booted it up, it was really loud. So I unhooked the power supply, and hotwired it. Was a lot quieter.

I took everything out, video card, wireless card, ram, everything else. I then started it up, was quiet still. But it did start up. I hooked it into the motherboard, and was still quiet. But didn't notice any beeps. I then used a heat dryer, heated up the power supply. It started up, and beeped. Every few seconds, it would beep (No ram). I installed the ram, beeping stopped, and seemed to be starting correctly. Starts loud, then quieted down. I then plugged in the video card, and still no video.

I still think it's the power supply...I don't think it has enough power to power the video card.

Anyone have any other ideas that I can try?

And thanks again for all the help :)

Have you measured the rail voltages?
