Police are trying to determine what killed a 50-year-old Detroit man who was found dead with part of his leg chewed off by an animal.

Family discovered the man in his home in the 15000 block of West Parkway at 3:57 p.m. Monday, said Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody today. They were checking on him after they hadn?t seen or heard from him in a few days.

When the landlord let them in, they found him dead with part of his leg chewed off by an animal.

?We think it?s a dog, but we don?t know ? we?re waiting on the autopsy,? Woody said.

Investigators are also uncertain how the man died.

?His body was in such a state of decomposition, we can?t tell if there was any foul play at this time,? Woody said. ?We may be looking at a homicide, we may be looking at a simple natural-causes death, so we can?t release a lot of details.?

An autopsy is being conducted by the Wayne County Medical Examiner?s Office.
