its not just due to the solar eclips.. you should never look directly at the sun with a naked eye... People tend to look at the sun for a long time when it is a solar eclips so they hurt there eyes.. Same thing happens if you do it on a normal day..

Does anyone know exactly why you shouldn't look directly at a solar eclips with a naked eye?

Its not the eclipse, its the sun. When you look at the eclipse, people look for too long and when the sun comes out of it a little bit (the dimond ring) that burns peoples eyes, just like if you do normally. People just tend to look directly at it because they can for a few minutes.

You don't stare at solar eclipses because the variety of radiation (UV, infrared, etc) that still beams down while the sun itself is covered. It's like cooking the back of your eyes when staring at nothing :x http://www.who.int/inf-fs/en/fact228.html

But i must say, i saw it on Discovery Channel last night, it looked spectacular... especially those close up shots when you can see some solar surface activity; the kind when the surface of the sun ejects bits of itself into space.

for a little bet better explination why, when you look at the solar eclipse your retina opens wider becasue not as much sun light is coming in, but as soon as a little bit comes out, your retina is still wide open and you get a healthy full blast of the sun right onto your rods and cones which can damage them

They can occur anywhere, just this one was only viewable in the extreme south. It just depends on where the moon is relative to the earth when the eclipse occurs. The next one is in 2005 around the Mediterranean area if i remember correctly.
