The gameplay mechanics have changed a bit from the N64 version e.g. you can't hang shells out the back of your shell and can't 'whistle' out of hitting a banana. This was because Ninty was trying to reduce the gap between veteran and novice players.

On multiplayer you'll find that people who have never played MK before will finish close to you because where you finish in a race is more to luck rather than skill to an extent; but the fact that theres 2 people to a kart holding 2 different items in a kart does put an element of strategy in what items you can use.

The single player isnt fantastic, but gets pretty intense on 150cc and theres plenty to unlock.

Multiplayer is seriously frantic and frankly addictive, my flatmates are playing it constantly and they never even liked the GC or played much MK before :)

You should defintely get MK if you get another 3 people round because its a great laugh and anyone can pick it up and start playing. The single player is not quite as good, but it's still worth getting :)

Super Mario Kart was more a racer, time trials and shaving tenths of seconds of your time. 64 was kinda a middle ground between Super and DD with less of an emphasis on Single and more on multi and benifited from it.

DD goes full hog and is no longer a racer but a party game, racing mechanics are almost alien to MK veterans, single player is stupidly easy, only offset by the ruined structure and now seemingly random and pot luck powerups destroying you making races no longer about skill but luck and frustration.

Multi player is where it's at with 4 player being fantastic as ever, the arenas are a bit too over simplified for my tastes but with 3 mates it's one of the best multiplayer games you can buy.

Mario Kart was one of my little sweethearts, I loved the game with a passion now I want to jab a pencil in Nintendos eye. If you've got 3 mates to play it with then don't hesitate, if not then don't expect it to hold your attention for more then a few hours :/

I've had it for about a week now and my verdict on the game is: very good. Sometimes I think it's spectacular but other times to me it's just very good.

The single player mode is indeed dying down for me now as I've almost unlocked most of the things. The AI in 150cc is insane for the sole reason that they use items extensively on you. It's extremely frustrating to be in first and then shot with 2 blue turtle shells back to back and drop back to like 3rd or 4th. But it's a fresh breather from Mario Kart 64 as I used to get 1st place all the time... now I can barely manage a 1st if I drive flawlessly.

The few times I went battle mode though were a blast. My friends and I were all screaming and yelling at each other at Shine Thief and when we had enough of that, Bob-Omb mode kept us playing for a few more hours.

I pretty much got MK for the single player aspect though and it kinda sucks that its interest is already fleeting me. I guess after you unlock most of the stuff it gets kind of stale.

But heck, don't just get a GC for Mario Kart. Pick up Metroid Prime while you're at it :D. Playing that along with MK right now and it's one helluva game.

Edit: Forgot to mention - the co-op mode in it rules. I play with my roommate all the time and it's a blast. One player just drives and the other has to power slide, use items, and can shove and hit people off the road. We laugh our heads off everytime someone punches the computer player into a ditch or something.

I just played Double Dash this weekend and thought it was a lot of fun. I have not played the battle modes yet but racing was cool. I got gold on all of the cups at all the speed levels. I was wondering if any of you have gone through the All World Cups at 100 and 150. I went through it at 50 cc yesterday and it did not unlock anything. Do the 100 and 150 World Cups unlock anything or are they just fun because you race all 16?

I got Mario Kart and I love it. Very fun to play even by yourself. With more than one unlockable character it is great. Also, there are plenty of karts to unlock. It is great. If you have a GameCube, this is a game to add to your collection.

Although the Battle Mode levels do seem a bit simplified, it is still great.

Edit:

one321: No, 50cc and 100cc on All cup do not unlock anything.

If you get Gold on the Cups, you unlock stuff. If you get Gold on all of the 100cc races, you unlock the Special Cup. I unlocked the Toad and Toadette duo and roadster and they seem to be the ones to use for now.
