etan4u
I have noticed since putting XP on my system that I get random wrong colored pixels.. I only notice the display problem with text (but that is probably just where it is easiest to spot and it happens indescriminantly). For example, a letter that is normally black like the rest of a word, sentence, and paragraph will have some pixels shown turquoise or some reddish color on my screen instead of black.. Highlighting the random poorly displayed text inverts or in some way changes the color (according to my highlighting settings) and then when unhighlighted the text displays correctly. I think a refresh of a webpage, or just scrolling the offending pixels off the screen and then back on may also repair the glitch, or give the software another change to display correctly what it originally goofed up on.. Does anybody have ANY idea what I am talking about.. any body else have the problem? is it a known bug associated with some aspect of my system.. (HW config below...) Perhaps a problem with the nvidia detonator XPs? I recently changed to the latest detonator xp 23.11 and I still have the colored pixel problem. this was originally a post to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, where I got a reply that clear type may be to blame. While I did a while back go to that MS website that installed or configured cleartype, I turned it off, after deciding it didn't do me any good. Perhaps these display bugs are being caused by whatever active-x install of cleartype did to my system? I think there were some dlls it left on my system. Anyway I checked in the display control panel, and clear type is off. SO I was hoping the neowin community might have some other info for me? Perhaps some of you out there are also experiencing this? Or better yet, dealt with, and solved the problem.. :D thanks in advance, -Ethan OS & Version = Win XP Ver 5.1.2600 CPU Type = Pentium III 450 Motherboard = AOpen AX6BC BIOS/Firmware = R2.55 Memory size = DIMM1 256MB PC133 stick DIMM2 128MB PC100 stick IDE 1 Channel = MASTER HDD Western Digital WDC WD205BA Slave HDD Maxtor 91303D6 IDE 2 Channel = CDROM, TOSHIBA XM-6202B PCI: Graphics card: MSI (Nvidia Based) - MS8807 TNT2 16meg 3d AG hantom ver 1a Sound card: Creative Labs - PCI 512 TV/Vid capture card: Hauppauge Win TV Model 61201 Rev. Redmak Administrators Posted January 23, 2002 Administrators Share Posted January 23, 2002 Try these settings in your bios (if you have them in there) First try: Fast Writes - disabled. Then try: UC or USWC - UC.

etan4u
ok I'll try those bios settings I think I have an option for Fast Writes, but what subheading is that under? >>UC or USWC - UC. what is that? an abreviation for something? I don't recognize it offhand. Too bad mine isn't associated with some game like quake.. perhaps there is something that triggers it, but I am yet to determine what that is. As best I can tell it strikes randomly, and the "artifacts" (is that what they call this?) are very annoying. -ethan any other takers? opinions? suggestions? solutions? etan4u
drats... well you get what you pay for.. I guess my graphics card is bugging out with the memory.. It is a MSI TNT2 16 meg, that a friend pulled out of some packard bell (or was it nec) computer that he had.. He upgraded to something not that much better, and I took the TNT2 It's worked well for me, but perhaps it is beginning to go south.. I've never tried to overclock the thing.. I've always been perfectly happy with it's regular spec'd performance, especially considering I didn't pay anything for it.. I presume you are 100% right about the memory, but of course I welcome any other suggestions to the contrary that offer a quick and easy software fix :) thanks for help... I knew the neowin community was the right place to go.. you guys got all the answers :D thanks guys, -ethan

jimmyt302
by any chance did you use the windows update to update your drivers for your vid card? cause i have a geforce3 ti200 and whenevr i use the Nvida drive update from microsoft, i get wierd discolorations with AIM, so anoying! so i had to reformat and stay away from windows update! etan4u
no I don't think I ever updated vid card drivers that way.. I did update drivers for my PCI 512 sound blaster card once through win update.. that is the sorta stuff I want to hear though.. maybe there is some software reason like that why it is doing this.. or should I stop deluding myself, and admit that my hardware is going south. -of course I'd like to hear otherwise, but perhaps after reformatting an HD in NTFS, reseating the stuff in my board etc.. this prob will go away? or am I really being overly optimistic? perhaps I am finally seeing the effects of installing and handling my hardware without properly grounding myself to the case.. maybe the first realization of too much EMI exposure etc. over the years.... you guys were referring to the RAM on the vid card going bad as opposed to my actual sticks of system SDRAM, or weren't you? etan4u
Dessimat0r, how do I flash the bios on the card? I actually looked into that a while back, and I didn't find and bios updates that were obviously for my card, nor could I find a utility that would help me out all that much with the flashing process.. as I have mentioned, my card is the following from MSI. MSI (Nvidia Based) - MS8807 TNT2 16meg 3d AG hantom ver 1a thanks in advance -Ethan
