eye_crust
Ok, Well i have a problem my brother gets paroled from prison couple days ago and he brings home papers that says he CANNOT use the internet or internal networks or BBS or any type of digital file sharing or what not, cause he is a sex offender, so i keep reading the papers and it says if they get suspision hes using any computer they can raid our house WITHOUT a warrent, so heres my problem, if they raid my house they will be looking for PORN mainly, but i deleted all porn so the only thing i have is Mp3s right now, and i dont wanna delete them cause of my stupid brother being in trouble and all this crap, so what i was thinking but i dont have no idea if its possible is i put all my files on a computer with a big harddrive and what i was thinking is making a partition on that harddrive where i would put files etc.. and have a program(IF THEY EXIST) to encrypt the harddrive in a fully encrypted key etc.. so i can unlock the partition when i need to get files on it and lock it when i dont need files, this way if they raid my house cause of my dumb brother they take my harddrives outa all 10 computers i have they will have a hard time breaking a encryption wheel to get my files, cause this town is dumb in cyber crime etc.. so i doubt they will be like HEY HES GOT ENCRYPTION SO LETS BREAK IT JUST TO BUST THEY SEX OFFENDER, so i need your help my fellow neowinians :)
Hypercube
PGPdisk, ntfs encryption ... pgp is preferred, though you can get tamper self-destruct harddisks if your budget would allow.
MegaManXcalibur
Ok what you need is thermite! When the cops come to raid your house you light it up and it completly destroys your hard drive (along with the computer, and probably your house!). But an easier way would be to get one of those wireless hard drives (I seen these on Tech TV). It's a hard drive you can put anywhere in your house, and you access it useing 802.11g. So they could come take your hard drives but they won't be able to get the one if they didn't know it exsisted. I don't know where to get these anymore but I'm sure somebody on this site knows. Anyhow if they find encrypted files I'm sure they can make you open them for them. But hey they can't do much if it's your porn, can they?
eye_crust
yeah they can, it strictly said anything in the house they can take for investigation, i mean yea they cant charge me but it means my brother can go back to prison for 20 years .. eye_crust
i just want a program that will encrypt the whole harddrive or what ever or "LOCK" it rather so when i goto bed or what ever i can lock it down and its totally encrypted.. :\
RadishTM Veteran Posted November 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 25, 2003 I'm sure the best encryption on the US market has back doors that are implemented by the NSA, FBI etc for security reasons .... So they would find out if they did take your hard disk, because they probably pass it on to your local FBI office to decrypt .... Radish?
eye_crust
lol, i doubt this my town has like 30 thousand people, i seriously doubt they would spend that much time and money on decrypting it just to bust one person for porn, im just wanting to protect private pictures and stuff i have of my gf etc.. RadishTM Veteran Posted November 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 25, 2003 But if it's encrypted when they find it, it gives the police more ideas at to what might actually be on the hard disk .... Radish?
Bling3k12
Ah damn, if this was OS X, I'd tell you to make a 128-bit encrypted Disc Image and store your music/porn/whatever in there... it'd take forever to get in... unless they MADE you hand over the password. But alas, this isn't. I'd look into a RAID or something, one hard drive mirroring the other, keep a backup drive in a secure location (a friend's house or something) and when someone comes over to check, remove one and bust the living hell out of it, catch it on fire, throw it away, something. :p

NeoSigma
maybe you should think about getting an external usb/firewire harddrive for yourself

Tartan
Just get a removable or external hard drive keeping all the stuff on. Edited November 25, 2003 by Tartan
Briandl79
Yeah I'd be more worried about living with a sex offender than some mp3 files........
eye_see_you
just to let you know no matter what encryption you have when I worked for the police department we were able to get into the most secure systems.
blackice912 Veteran Posted November 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 25, 2003 Get a network hard drive, give the network hard drive its own wireless router, put it somewhere in the attic or in a wall, dump everything to there. Best Buy has the network hard drives.
