Okay, let's come to the point: Do you feel the paragraph below sounds like spoken by a native English speaker? The basic research is very important. The progressive history of modern civilization has proved that every major breakthrough in basic research raises our ability to understand and change the world, increases innovation in science and technology by developing high technology industry which boosts our economy and culture. Malechai Veteran Posted November 25, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 25, 2003 Yes it does, though the 2nd sentence is a little too long. Break the 2 thoughts into 2 separate sentences if you'd like to clean it up a bit.
dougkinzinger
JB -- "has proved" should be "has proven". And you may want to split the sentance -- while not a true run-on sentence, it is a bit long.

MxxCon
2nd sentence is a run-on, and uses 2 different tenses, which is wrong.
JohnsonBox
dougkinzinger, the past participle of prove can be proved, or proven. Still, thanks for comment, esp. for your opinon regarding "run-on" question. Spyder and BOOGSoftball also have come to the point. :)
noir
Why ask for advice if you're already set on what's correct?

Trust me, you just don't do it. So change it. If you don't, it won't sound like a native English speaker as you want.
noir
he isn't asking for advice... he wants an answer to his question which was "Do you feel the paragraph below sounds like spoken by a native English speaker?" Isn't that kind of the same thing? If it's correct it would be the way a native English speaker would say it.

yanman
no, not really, advice is more of asking for a course of action.. whereas his question is just a yes or no answer. and also keep in mind that he is learning english, so be easy on him. but i can see where you're coming from
mr.dan
fundamental should be used instead of basic. My edit: Fundamental research is important. The progressive history of modern civilization has proven that every major breakthrough in fundamental research expands our ability to understand and change the world. In addition, it intensifies innovation in science and technology via an increase in development throughout the technology industry. This increased development in turn boosts our economy and culture. You should try and stay from run on sentences, forms of the verb to be, passive voice, and ambiguous vocabulary. I didn't correct all of these errors as I don't have time at the moment but I did get you started. Your english is improving, that is if that paragraph was written by you. Cheers, dan

MxxCon
oh uh. sjiggag23 expect a "witty" remark from JB about your knowledge of english, and how it is inadequate to tell him what's wrong and right.

If you use it with has, it's better to say it like: It has proven to be a trying time.

If you say so, I'm afraid your account of Neowin will be banned. You wanted to insult a non-English speaker, but your poor knowledge and wisdom has led you to a blind alley. Here I show you why you've barked up the wrong tree: You said:"... if you want to make it sound like an english speaker, listen to what doug says. " So you mean "an english speaker" is "doug"? You'd better lay off the cheebers and apologize. Or I'm afraid your account will be banned.
.... That's what I love about this thread. JB doesn't know the language himself, and yet, he tells others who speak English, that his way is correct. It's like the ebonics fad that came through. He's just starting a new one....to make Engrish an official language.
