Union questions

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine is asking me for help with these questions, and I can't think of anything. Can you guys help us?

1. What are two benefits of being a member of your union?

2. What are two disadvantages of being a member of your union?

3. If you have a choice would you remain a member?

4. Write the name of the person you talked to and what union that person is from.

List 3 generalizations of the current role of the union (how it effects the economy)

Sounds like whoever wrote those questions has heavy Neo Conservative outlook and is expecting answers that will disfavour Unions.

Surely you know someone in a Union you could ask for some truthful feedback.

Honestly I don't know. I only wanted to look for help around here since I can't help him myself. Just thought I'd try to do him a favor.

You can probably get questions like these answered *far* better elsewhere.

In general though, unions allow workers to combine resources and cooperate together to bargain for benefits, work conditions, and the like. Without unions, workers can get pretty screwed over even though they have otherwise shared interests. Formal association and representation can be better than just underground word of mouth, whatever.

On the downside, one can be tied a bit more to union agenda(s) despite personal views, unions don't always have properly accountable systems, and union existence can set up a bit more of a formal split between management and "workers", and views can become more polarized than they would be otherwise.

Whether or not one should be a member of a union is largely dependent upon the specific one, how well coordinated / representative / "reasonable" it is, and lots of other specifics relative to one's individual circumstances.

Your friend needs to have more specific questions regarding their particular circumstances, or else do general web searches regarding union operations if their questions are general / for an assignment or something.
