suprfli
i have a KVM switch and i'm using 3 pc's on one keyboard/monitor/mouse. when i switch over from my win98se machine to my win2k or winXP machine i hear my CPU and HD going nuts. since win98se doesn't have the tools that win2k and XP have i'm having a tough time figuring out wtf is causing the thrashing. i checked the system monitor and the graph is maxing out. the resource meter is telling me 63% of system user and GDI resources are free and other than the absolute basics i have NO apps openned. this is happening right after the machine is booted up. whenever i'm not owrking on the pc i hear it thrashing. when i get back on the win98se machine and open a folder or drive the thrashing immediately stops. i've used ad-aware and norton to make sure there aren' any viruses or spyware searching my drive or using an unknown appp but no results. i'm stumped. i would install winXP or win2k just to be able to monitor the processes but there must be better tools win98 to diagnose this and see what processes are running. can someone help me out here? cub-x
Windows 9x series sometimes cause alot of activity on the harddisk. I thought it was cleaning up it's virtual memory or clearing out physical RAM.. And it probably also does this in "idle"-time, meaning it stops when you take over control again of your machine. gam_EZ
When your system resources are running at 100% thats a sign of certain worms that have been floating around the internet for a while, it would be a good idea to run a scan for them. suprfli
leave it to the ba$tards at MS. what a waste of resources. "mosearch - Fast Search in Office XP - similar to the new revision of the Find Fast feature in Office 2000. Fast Search uses the Indexing Services in Office XP to create a catalog of Office files on your computer's hard disk. As with Fast Search - a waste of resources. If it can't be disabled via MSCONFIG try here" i just got an excel spreadsheet and needed in insert the office XP cd to install a component. i guess this was the magic component. more details here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;EN-US;q282106 http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/n997979777 http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:pomAC...+mosearch&hl=en
glancep
leave it to the ba$tards at MS. what a waste of resources. well now, let's be fair here.... this is a feature, believe it or not. What it's doing is very similar to Indexing Services found in Windows 2000/XP. What it does is look at a lot of your files on your hard drive to get an idea of what's there, that way when you want to search for a file that contains the words "bob" or something, it'll go a hell of a lot faster. And it is NOT a waste of resources... as you pointed out, as soon as you start using the machine, it stops. It only runs when the system is IDLE... so what is it wasting?? Disable the feature if you don't like it... Gideon
Krome
superfli, hehehe you're just paranoid... I guess you read too many threads concerning XP subjects... hehehehe Win98 does that... I knew you gonna find something like that as I read through the whole posts, I started to giggle over your problem... This is nothing new... one other thing about that problem of yours is after you crash a program that use lots of hard drive as RAM, it will try to clear out and defrag that section automatically in the background... that's why you have that hard drive whirling away... take care... don't be too paranoid with ME and other versions below... suprfli
lol. i may be a little paranoid. :p one man's paranoia is another man's security blanket. heh. anyway, since it's running w/the CPU is idle i gues calling it a waste of resources isn't accurate. it's nice to have the HD indexed but if it only saves me 5 seconds on a search it's not worth the annoyance. personally, i don't like apps running w/o my explicit permission. the other issue is that having the pc next to me and hearing the drive churn and churn constantly is annoying as hell. :cheeky:
