Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted November 20, 2013 Veteran Share Posted November 20, 2013 The United States Geological Survey reports that a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was reported two miles from Nelsonville at 12:59 p.m. Athens County Emergency Management officials said they had 12-18 calls. Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly reported that the earthquake was between Pancake and Brady Roads. He posted on his Facebook page that deputies were enroute to that area to assess the area and report to EMA. Most of the responses to the U.S. Geological Survey Did You Feel It? webpage were from Athens, Nelsonville, Logan, and Lancaster. No damage or injuries were immediately reported. DocM
This was likely caused by the Starr fault system, the eastern end of which terminates in Athens County. Worse would be if the New Madrid fault were to go off, which runs from Illinois to Arkansas. When it slipped in 1812 it caused a series of quakes averaging 7.7, one of which rang church bells in Detroit and Boston. Felt in 23 states. It's overdue for another "party."
