mortensen
Many people have had troubles get Tribes 2 to run on WinXP. It is recommend that you try the 12.90 and 14.xx drivers to get it to run. NOTE: Some people have experienced troubles after installing the Beta 5 patch (by the new dev team) with Windows XP. The best bet it to update drivers. Also, old sound cards can apparently give UE errors as well so if you have a really old sound card it may be time to update. All this information was gained from browsing through the official Sierra Tribes 2 forum.
Lezend
Work fine on Windows XP Professional for me. Just that frames rate is not as good as windows 2000 professional or Windows 98SE
mortensen
When you say there is a difference in the frame rate have you got any figures? I have read in many different places that WinXP is faster and in others that it is slower... Also, have you tried both D3D and OpenGL in WinXP as D3D is much better supported in WinXP than OpenGL? baphomet_irl Veteran Posted September 10, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 10, 2001 ive tried both GL and D3D - and GL was faster, also D3D disabled some of the fancier settings options.
mortensen
What spec computer do you have and how many FPS are you getting in Tribes 2? I've only got a Duron 700 / 256RAM / TNT2 - Will this be able to run it well???
baphomet_irl Veteran Posted September 10, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 10, 2001 this is my box: PIII 750 384MB PC100 RAM RADEON 64MB DDR or Geforce2MX (I might be changin back to my GeForce2 MX if the detonator 4's give me better fps that the radeon. The radeon's a vastly superior card - its just the drivers are sh1t :/.) Anywayz @ 800x600 32-bit and most settings on and texture details at about 80% - i get 30-45 fps :/ - the engine seems to get very 'choppy' particularly when i come out of an enclosed area into a larger area (much as the quake engine did when i had less ram) this is v depressing when uve just been playing quake at 80-135fps :s my friend has an athlon 850,128MB and a TNT2, which is probably closer to ur system as a benchmark. his is PLAYABLE 640 x 480 @ 16-bit - with polygonal detail down v low (causing pretty intense visual anomolies and those 'zig-zags' where two planes of similar angles meet (i.e when water is near a shore (u might konw what i mean if u ever ran quake 3 in 16-bit - it usually happened where curved surfaces intercepted flat ones). It is ugly but it is playable. I would say u should still get the game - as it's true beauty lies in the actual gameplay, and u can upgrade ur gfx card later if u want. It really is an amazing game - althou the servers do seem to have more rude ppl than the average FPS (well quake3 anyway). Anyway hope that helped....... mortensen
I played a WAREZ copy ages ago and I liked it so much that's why I want to get it... the gameplay is brilliant [the vehicles are SO much fun] and it wasn't TOO slow on my system. I know warez is bad but I will always get a good game! I will too try out the Detonator 4 drivers when they are released. I don't know my exact speed for Quake 3 [Elite Force - but uses the Quake 3 engine] but it's REALLY fast on my machine... 800x600x32, full texture and geometry details, good online play of like 40 ping [on my 64k cable modem], high sound quality... all on my crappy TNT2 - must be at least 60fps [same as Half-Life], and UT runs just as fast. Also, my brothers play against me on their crappy machines reasonably well [450, 256RAM, SB!Live, TNT2 M64 + 400, 64RAM, on-board sound, TNT]. I've heard that the patches make it a lot better than out of the box [the warez version was the base version, no patches]. PS - It's my birthday soon [Monday 17th September] and I'll be getting Tribes 2 tomorrow [11th] if all goes as planned... I birthdays!
baphomet_irl Veteran Posted September 10, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 10, 2001 cool yeh the vehicles are absolutely incredible - especially the tank and the bomber - or flying escort for a bomber in shrike (light fighter thing) theres nothing quite like 3 ppl in the same bomber doing a bombing run, then diving the bomber into the water to avoid missile fire (in the map Archipelago) ill see u on Jolt or Barrysworld when u get it :) - unfortunately NGUK's tribes server is gone :/, and my ping is kinda dodge at BW, and jolt is usually empty - oh well hope u enjoy it :) PS should use gamespy3d with tribes2 - the in game server browser is a pain in the arse - the 'favorites' option in particular - dont worry about it usin system mem - u can set it to close when u enter a server
mortensen
I use Gamespy for Half-Life [when I had it installed]. And yes, nothings more fun than three people in the same vehicle [especially when we're all in the same physical room talking to each other]. As for the community, all communities CAN be bad... sometimes I get SO sick of playing Half-Life [Team Fortress Classic] with everyone with 50+ kills being a "wallhacker", and EVERYONE saying "HWGay" and "HWGuys are for n00b's only"! That's why I'm moving on from Half-Life... I'm just so sick of people accusing others of cheating [like someone went into Spectator mode and said the Medic was cheating because his health was going up!!! LMFAO]. I'd love to meet up and play sometime... I don't know how Tribes 2 works online, how the servers are done, how you find buddies, etc - With Elite Force I ONLY use the in-game browser but with Half-Life you HAVE to use Gamespy because it takes SO long to refresh the in-game list, but I'll give the Tribes 2 in-game browser a chance first. At least the game is still being supported after Dynamix were axed, as a Beta patch was released only the other day which was my main worry. baphomet_irl Veteran Posted September 10, 2001 Veteran Share Posted September 10, 2001 yeh cool man :) jus tell us when u get it yeh there are llamas in all games - it's just that in my particular branch of the Quake3 community (!), Rocket Arena 3, most ppl have been playin 4 a long time - so theyre usually not so rude- and cos its such a small community u get to know ppl pretty quik. I was jus shocked by the amount of rudeness and team killing goin on in tribes 2.
mortensen
I've got Tribes 2 now and it runs perfectly under WinXP with the 21.80 Detonator 4 drivers. I've only had ONE UE error when messing with loads of settings. Performance isn't perfect but it's perfectly playble [full ground detail, full textures, 800x600x32]... though I would have liked it to be a bit faster. I have yet to play it online yet...
