JetFixxxer
I have an X-Fi that I use SPDIF out on. Ever since I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 it's been nothing but grief with my sound card. Rocksmith 2014, Jammit, and ASIOAll tell me that my card is being utilized by some other program. I open the mixer and see an "Name Not Available" as a slider and I can't locate what that is. Hum
Laptop or desktop PC ? Can you Remove the sound card, Reboot, then Shut down, and Reinstall it ? Windows 8.1 may find the right driver, and configure the sound. I would also run something like CCleaner, to check for Registry problems, before Reinstalling. I would also check the sound card maker's support site for Updated drivers. Probably wouldn't hurt to check for Adware, Trojans, as well.
protocol7
Flash is the usual culprit here with ASIO4ALL. I just kill it from the task manager. Sometimes it's Steam.

JetFixxxer
I found out the culprit. It's "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation" if I disable it all works great, but with other concenquences. Once I disable it I loose all my in game sounds and can't switch between headphone and 5.1 speakers.
Hum
^ I would look around the Microsoft site -- maybe they will put out a fix for Windows 8.1. I don't know if this would help you: http://www.ehow.com/info_12214253_windows-audio-device-graph-isolation.html The audiodg.exe application is not a virus. However, since it's an executable file, it's possible for malware, trojans or viruses to hide inside the file name and infiltrate your system.
