Google bans 1400 words

Why, Google, you?re a prude!

On the latest version of Android, the predictive text won?t recognize the words ?sex,? ?intercourse? or ?screwing,? among others.

Poking around the source code, Wired magazine discovered an ?obsessive? and ?baffling? list of 1,400 words ? many naughty, some just weird ? that Google wants to protect its users from seeing.

The list includes ?coitus? and a few more variations on knocking boots, plus some medical and anatomy terms and slightly racy words such as ?panty.?

?Taken as a whole,? Wired concludes, ?Google?s list suggests not only a surprising discomfort with sexuality, but also reproductive health and undergarments.?

There?s even a whiff of self-loathing. Two nonsexy words that offend Google Keyboard are ?geek? and ?Chromebook?? the latter being the name for the firm?s own line of laptops.

Users can still type any dirty word onto an Android screen themselves, but must do so the traditional way ? every letter, from start to finish. That means overriding the keyboard when it tries to volunteer something cleaner. ?Condom,? for example, will become ?condition? if you let it. The solution, says Wired, is to go into the app?s settings menu and disable the word-blocking filter. Then you can have all the ?coitus? you like.

I find myself doing that a lot anyway.

Pretty sure there's a checkbox in settings for disabling this, along with enabling other dictionaries and adding custom words.

Does Google think its users cant handle the word intercourse?

I would assume the words are blocked in the event a youngster got a hold of the device.

Speaking as an Android device owner, what is this 'intercourse' you speak of?

Noun

"communication and actions between people"

or it could mean where a rooster jumps on top of a chicken :shiftyninja:

It's to prevent other words being auto-corrected to those, nothing actually stops the user from typing them in.

This is why we have mobile conversations that make no sense!

"When I come over tonight I want to your brains out on the couch so we can have like rabbits" ..

"HUH?"

i think it is kinda stupid that they would remove any words from the predictive text, they should just allow the whole dictionary and deal with it. It is not your phone's job to scold you when you are doing something stupid.

Also before anyone goes off half colked it is not just Google that does this. Everyone does it.

Annoying, but somewhat understandable given that it could autocorrect to a swear word which obviously wouldn't be "family friendly". Same thing seems to happen with Swiftkey as well. Fortunately an easy feature to disable.

You can disable it...non issue.

Lots of services filter words.  Nothing new in the tech industry.  If Google didnt do this, first time a kid sees the word ######, then people will be upset at Google for not filtering the words.

Oh good, now we have Google being the king over what words are "bad" and further sheltering people. This is stupid. If the word is in the dictionary, it should be in the keyboard dictionary. If it didn't want to suggest a "bad word", then I could see that, but having to force it to accept it over other suggestions is ridiculous. This is what our world has come to. We have to have someone protect us from words now. That's so ridiculous.

That is true, even though most kids curse worse than many adults that I know.
