Interpreter at Mandela memorial called a fake

Recommended Posts

Man who was supposed to be signing for the deaf was just "flapping his arms", experts say, as government investigates.

The man who was supposed to be signing for the deaf at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was a fraud, according to sign language experts.

While dignitaries addressed the crowd at the former South African president's globally broadcast memorial, the man produced a series of hand signals that meant absolutely nothing, observers said on Wednesday.

"He wasn't even doing anything. There was not one sign there. Nothing," said Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town. "He was literally flapping his arms around."

The allegations have raised questions about how and why the unidentified man managed to insert himself into a supposedly secure event attended by scores of heads of state, including US President Barack Obama.

I didn't even notice it was fake as I have no knowledge about sign language

Yup that's definitely fake, he ends too soon, though some of the motions would appear as genuine, (I also have to admit, I do not know sign language neither, but have seen real sign language interpreters)

That's right ... that is fake...

The interpreters are certified which can show you proof that he/she knows sign language from the school or wherever he/she was taught...

That man in the video ... he's probably not certified... just playing along.

Much ado about nothing.

I'm guessing you're not deaf nor have any appreciation of the rather massive security blunder this is.

It makes you ashamed to think these idiots represent us in the world platform.

He was flailing his arms around trying to get his Xbox One's Kinect to work.

I kid I kid!!

Quite ballsy of the guy to do this at such a large event.  Did he think nobody would notice??

Apparently he is schizophrenic and had an episode during the memorial.

Not an expert on schizophrenia, but I have never heard of someone inventing a fake sign language, or any language, during an episode. If he was signing incomplete sentences or got some of the words right that excuse might be easier to swallow.

Yeah yeah yeah, allegedly having schizophrenia and having an episode is a classic hilarious excuse.

Officer "So why did you rob the bank"

Robber "I had an episode, and I have schizophrenia,."

Officer "Righhhhht"

So if you have an episode, and rob the bank, and go to trial, and your alter ego gets prosecuted, what happens to you?

I am saying, that guy didn't have schizophrenia , he looked perfectly fine to me. Saying you have schizophrenia really sounds like a great way to get out of something you did wrong
