Using the VGA out on my Imac?

Recommended Posts

I've got an older Imac (Grape Imac DV) its got a VGA out on the back, Its running Panther.

I've hooked the VGA port up to a KVM switch (just the video) so I could work on it with the comfort of my Samsung monitor.. however I cannot get it to work

Any ideas?

I wish I knew, my 17" iMac has some special port I bought an Apple adapter for (to connect a VGA monitor to the port) and I connected it and it doesn't work. I think you need a firmware hack or something :/

Is there a button you need to press. A friend of mine brought his XP-Laptop into uni so we could watch a DVD clip through the projector.

So,

1.) Connected VGA port to projector;

2.) It didn't work, so we went through all the settings and it detected the projector...but nothing.

Solution,

1.) Connected VGA port to projector;

2.) Pressed F4 once he logged into XP, it all worked because F4 was assigned to switch between LCD & VGA.

Check your manual or press the Function Keys and see if that helps.

I don't have an iMac yet but there has got to be a simple way considering it comes with a VGA port, it's best to have a glance through the manual at the Display settings/options.

My PowerBook has no trouble viewing on a second display where it'd be S-Video, VGA, DVI, etc. It all worked, and I could either mirror or treat it as a second display. I don't know what's going on with yours though. Maybe iMacs just have that problem. :\

just a question, using the vga out, can i have larger resolutions on a bigger monitor?

As with all computers, as long as the graphics card can handle the higher refresh rates then yes. It's all dependant on graphics card max. resolution & monitor max. resolution.

Check what graphics card/chipset you're using and visit the website (Nvidia or ATi most likely) and find out from there.
