Disc vs. Disk

Recommended Posts

Hard drives and floppy drives are definetly supposed to be disk, as is evidenced in Device Manager.

CD/DVD and any other optical media is disc. Evidence? Open a music CD case, and on the top right corner it has the familiar Compact Disc logo.

Tek has it right, Disk is short for Diskettes, and Disc for Compact Disc (They wouldnt make it Compact Disk, because a CD is not a Compact Diskette)

I've heard rumors that the C was changed from the K, in order to further push the "Compact" idea. Who knows though, but Tek has the most logical response

yes, marriam webster lists Disc and Disk as the same but alternative spellings for the same word.

Depends, I guess. CD-ROMS are most certainly discs. Floppies and harddrives, on the other hand, are disks (short for diskette). So I didn't cast a vote on this as you did not specify which type of media you were reffering to.
