Detroit's 'Blowtorch Rapist' captured

You have to be tough in MoTown....

And notice the 6 minute response time. It was 1-3 hours before their new, very aggressive, police chief started reorganizing the department and knocking heads. Now they're hitting crime hotspots with 300 man raids.

Detroit -- A 23-year-old man suspected in three sexual assaults that included burning his victims with a blowtorch was arraigned Saturday.

Roderick Neely has been charged with torture, unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to maim, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, and felon in possession and felony firearm. Neely was bound over Saturday without bond.

Neely has a preliminary exam scheduled for Feb. 6.

Neely was arrested Thursday morning as he and an accomplice were allegedly committing a home invasion on Dexter on the city's west side, Detroit Police Deputy Chief David LaValley said.

Police officers from the 12th Precinct responded 6 minutes after a 911 call was placed reporting the home invasion, and when they arrived, the suspects were still inside.

The most recent alleged assault was 2 a.m. Wednesday, when the man allegedly attacked a 43-year-old woman near Plymouth and Meyers The woman told investigators the man ripped her clothes off and set her on fire with a blowtorch. Police said the woman escaped "by grabbing a tool and stabbing the man in the eye."

(NOTE: other reports say it was a screwdriver)

"It was the victim's unwavering desire to survive that gave her the strength to overcome her attacker. Throughout the investigative process, the victim remained steadfast in her sense of duty to ensure that this criminal was taken off the streets, ending his rein of terror for all women in and around the city of Detroit," Detroit police said in a statement.

That attack was similar to two others in July, in which a man also sexually assaulted women before using a blowtorch to burn them. According to Detroit police data, there have been 11 other sex crimes reported in the last six months within a two-mile radius of where Wednesday's incident happened.

Chief Craig has made it clear what was being done was not good enough. He will fire poorly performing officers and supervisors at the drop of a hat, and he will call in task forces including surrounding communities, the Feds, State, County, Border Patrol and Homeland Security if needed. He also supports concealed carry & active self defense.

So, how long before they start calling him Robocop? :p

I think if he thought putting on the suit would help, he'd do it. He's already played "Santa", delivering Christmas food aid packages to poor neighborhood folks and elders during the Operation Mistletoe raid. Reports are the whole block was cheering.

I bet the honest folks in Detroit are just -loving- this guy! :)

All but a few civil liberties types who don't like the "military style" (their words) tactics. The problem is that with these street gangs you have to go in with overwhelming force to accomplish anything.

He's also hammering the Old Way of doing things.

Last week he ordered disciplinary action on a police supervisor who let off a city councilman stopped with an open liquor bottle in the car. Too late to get the councilman because the evidence "disappeared", but the Chief went on TV and named names. He also told Council there would be no more free rides.

A screwdriver is a tool

Obviously, but being stabbed in the eye with a screwdriver is a tad different than the same action with a paint brush or blunt handle.

Really?  I would have no idea.  However, the point being that they suggest a correction whereas a clarification was called for.

Good thing that rapist is off the streets or he'd become the Governor from The Walking Dead.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

BTW: Detroit gets a Robocop statue soon. They're finishing the detailing and treating the bronze. The plan is for it to be at the Wayne State University TechTown high tech development.

Shortly before it was shipped
