No. Movies haven't gotten any wider. 2.35:1 has been a popular format for decades. Nothing has changed.

KZSF getting a new patch which provides option to lock FPS to 30

 

A new patch for PlayStation 4 launch title Killzone Shadow Fall will let you force its single-player frame-rate to 30fps, developer Guerrilla Games has detailed.

 

Killzone Shadow Fall's campaign currently varies between 30 and 35fps due to its detailed environments (the multiplayer portion runs at 60fps, meanwhile), which can introduce judder and make the experience feel less consistent - something that the new 30fps lock will help fix.

 

"To guarantee a steadier framerate in the campaign mode, players can now lock their game to 30fps via the options menu," Guerrilla explained via Killzone.com.

The full image being rendered is still 1080, but 280 of it is black bars (which obviously isn't taxing). However, the other 800p is still receiving the full rendering advantages, i.e it won't look blurred like a native 720 vs 1080 image would.

 

It's a coin toss however you want to look at it.

Ah I see, so in effect, the game is 1920x1080?

Why even call it 1920x800? That just asks for confusion. Black boxes or not, if the entire frame is rendering at 1920x1080, then that's that.

I hope more developers give us this option on console games.

This is a pc feature that can be just as useful on consoles now.

From what we know and what the devs have actually said, the game is 1080p. The debate is, are the black bars an excuse because it can't do "fullscreen gameplay" 1080p or is it artisitc choice, I guess?

 

I've read that black bars don't need rendering at all, but I'm pretty sure when it comes to movies they are. Pirates will often crop the image to remove them and reduce file sizes for their rips. Movies aren't rendered in real time obviously so it's a bit of a messy subject. When it comes to games/The Order, I'm pretty sure the PS4 will still have to render them, but the resources required are tiny. If the full image were a 3D rendered world, a lot more processing has to be done as we're talking about 25% of an engine here.

 

Like TRDE, The Order isn't going to be a great example of debate as there's far too much semantics. Only the devs could shed more light on it.

I found this list the other day on IGN.

 

So if you use that list, and the other articles that have been on the web in regards to #resolutiongate, PS4 is doing much better from a resolution and framerate standpoint on multiplatform titles.

 

A lot of people are quick to point out that the One has plenty of games that are currently 1080p, and while this is indeed correct, what is worth nothing about most, if not all, of those games, is they are either from the sports or racing genre.

 

One must keep in mind that with those two respective genres, the backgrounds are either completely static and/or very limited in interaction. Thus much less resources are needed in order to render them as opposed to a game like Assassin's Creed IV and Call Of Duty: Ghosts, both of which feature environments that are much more interactive. Basically (with the exception of the invisible walls in COD), if you can see it, you can play in it. This means by their very nature those latter games are much more resource intensive. These games as a result are a better representation of the horsepower behind each system because of their more complex engines and environments.

 

So right now it is safe to say the PS4 has more power than the One. I do not think this is going out on a limb. I do not think this is an over exaggeration. I think that in this point in time it is indeed a fact.

 

Will the One catch up one day? Perhaps it will, but just as developers continue to optimize and make advancements in developing for it, they will also do so for the PS4. So the gap we see today will always exist, it just may not be so prominent. It will more than likely come down to stuff like AA, lighting, etc.

 

Even though both generations we have pretty much had one system that is arguably more powerful than the other (last gen was 360 > PS3, this gen it is PS4 > One) I think the biggest difference between this generation and the last generation is last generation the difference, while it existed, was actually much smaller compared to what we are currently seeing right now. 720p > 640p. Games averaging 30 fps (360) while only averaging 26 fps (PS3 (just an example, I know there are other examples that there is a larger difference, just as there are examples where there is less of a difference). As such, I do find it very interesting that it seems the same people who were incredibly quick to point out all of those differences last generation and made a fairly big deal out of those difference, are the same people who are now downplaying the differences in this current "next" generation, even though the numbers actually show a much larger discrepancy this generation as compared to last, especially in regards to frame rate.

 

With all that said, three of my favorite games so far since both consoles have launched have been Ryse, Dead Rising 3, and Forza 5. So resolution be damned. I enjoyed and am still enjoying the hell out of all 3. Would I have preferred all of those games were a higher resolution? As a consumer spending 100's of dollars on each system who is also a PC gamer, so I have actually been gaming at 1080p / 60 fps since both consoles were released last generation, yeah, I would have liked that my latest investment actually ran at the native resolution of the big HD TV I spent good money on. Absolutely. This does not change the fact I am still loving playing the games that are not running at a native resolution, but it is a disappointment. No way to sugar coat this fact. So I hope I am no doubt proven wrong, and ALL games will run 1080p / 60 fps in the near future. All I am saying is I am having a hard time envisioning this to be an absolute fact based on what we have initially seen thus far.

They seem to be implying that it is native 1920x800/30 in order for them to hit performance targets that allow the use of 4XMSAA.

 

This whole resolution business always gets convoluted when it comes to consoles.

No its native 1080p but running black borders is easy and allows them to do what they're doing.

If one console pulls ahead and offers a better experience it very well might be game over for their competition. If, and I stress if, the PS4 with a cheaper price point offers a better experience, the X1 is going to find itself in a world of hurt.

 

If this is an issue of growing pains; devs still working out the kinks & learning how to optimise than it might not matter in the long run.

Well consoles in the past have still succeed even if they weren't the most powerful. It depends on things like price, the amount of difference, and hard to quantify things like popularity of games. Sometime a unique feature set can do it as well.

 

As far as if the X1 will end up close enough to the ps4, who knows. Some here would say its already over.

Because it is x800 for the viewable gameplay. As we have discussed earlier though that x800 isn't upscaled or stretched, its cropped from a 1080p input.

Then I suggest not calling it 1920x800. Its silly to confuse things by throwing out a number that is not really accurate and has to be explained.

 

This game will be 1920x1080/30.  Whatever they do to the screen such as crop the usable space, is up to them.

That's not necessarily true at all... Price maybe will play a role in people's choices...But "resolution/graphics". Not at all. If games look slightly better on the PS4, how does that make the One a bad experience or vice versa?

It's 1920x800. But instead of stretching the image they display black borders. I think calling this 1080p native is a little misleading even if it's not necessarily false. I'm not sure how it is going to work in a game. They should give the option to run the game at 1920x1080 with FXAA or 1920x800 with 4x MSAA and black borders.

Maybe its time that console gamers got a real taste of the pc experience. Developers could finally offer graphics settings and let us tweak them as we wish.

 

They could included recommended settings as well.

Well it's not really 1920x800. Cause if it would be 1920x800 the monitor or TV would stretch the image as LCD panels can't display anything other than native res. Other supported res are stretched to native res.

In this case the game will output 1080p with black bars so neither the PS4 nor the TV will stretch the image.

Officially it's 1080p with a different aspect ratio than gamers are used to play at. The problem is when it comes to gaming people expect 1080p to be at 16:9 aspect ratio (unlike movies where it can be of different aspect ratio and is written at the back of the case).

Personally I think it's time for console games to always have written at the back of the case the resolution, approx average frame rate and well it seems aspect ratio too lol.

The days of the simple console experience are long gone.

 

I wonder if we could handle it if suddenly we didn't have all of this information and were just handed games to play, like it was when we were growing up.

I would like too. But the blurriness of console titles prevent me from doing so. The thing i hate the most in a game is blurriness (along with tearing). I hate this more than slight lag. The first thing i turn off when playing a PC game for the first time is FXAA/MLAA, any kind of postprocessing, motion blur and DOF. I also set the native res right away. If i can't run games with 4x MSAA at native res i upgrade my PC. I did not upgrade in 4 years though (except the gpu once).

That's why so far i'm a little bit disappointed. I expected the PS4 and 360 to be able to pull 1080p30 with 4x MSAA in pretty much all games. I mean my PC can with current games and it's an old i5 750 with a single 670. Today a PC as powerful as this one doesn't cost a lot more than an Xbox One if you don't count the monitor. My PC can run Tom Raider at 1920x1080 with 2x SSAA and all settings to ultra including TressFX and it can keep an average framerate of around 50 with a minimum of 30. From what i can see in videos it looks pretty much as good as the PS4 version. The action is smooth and it's perfectly playable.

Anyway i understand it's still early and One/PS4 games will improve over time but it's not really a great start so far imo.

I can't really remember how it was at the beginning of last gen, but was that a better start compared to pcs?

 

If it was, then what is different this time?  PC hardware gets better at a much faster rate then say 8 years ago, so maybe its making consoles look worse sooner.  Sony and MS both chose to not build consoles that would be sold at a loss from the start, so maybe that has resulted in consoles that aren't as close to say the pc high end as last gen consoles might have been.

      Microsoft unveiled a couple of security features for Microsoft 365 early in 2020, which included Application Guard. Today, the company announced that Application Guard for Office has hit general availability.

      The feature basically puts documents from untrusted sources in a container before opening them in order to ward off malicious threats. Microsoft also noted that it analyzes every malicious attack contained by Application Guard to bolster its threat intelligence. Your files are also protected from kernel-based attacks since it uses Hyper-V-based containers.

      Unlike Protected View which opens documents in read-only mode, Application Guard opens files in a virtualized sandbox where you can still edit and print documents in a limited capacity without leaving the container. These files include those coming from untrusted sites, files stored in potentially unsafe folders or network, and documents blocked by File Block.



      That said, you can still choose to disable protection for a specific file if necessary, provided you're confident that it's safe. Prior to opening that file, it will be scanned with the Safe Documents feature if it's enabled. In addition to documents, emails are protected as well with combined security from Application Guard and Microsoft Defender for Office 365.

      The new feature is turned off by default and administrators will need to set the right policy for each user in an organization. It's available to customers on Current Channel and Monthly Enterprise Channel while a rollout in Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel is scheduled later this year.

      Microsoft releases Edge Dev 89.0.774.4, the final build for version 89

      As is the case every week, Microsoft has released a new Edge build for users in the Dev channel. Today’s build bumps the version up to version 89.0.774.4, which is the last build from major version 89 making it to the Dev channel. The firm is planning to promote this build to the Beta channel next week, pending any small bug-fixing updates.

      As for the build itself, there are a couple of new features, bringing improvements to Collections and the Read Aloud function for PDFs, along with the host of fixes to reliability and changed behavior. Additionally, the firm highlights the completion of features such as History and Open Tabs sync, something that has been rolled out to all versions of the browser. It also adds that builds across channels now sport support for Apple Silicon natively.

      With this version making it to the Beta channel, the first version 90 build might make it to the Dev channel as early as next week. Guessing from this week’s Feedback Summary, one of the features that might make it to that version is the ‘Tab Previews’ option from Edge Legacy.

      As is the case always, today’s release should automatically be downloaded and installed. However, you can head into Settings > About Microsoft Edge to manually check for updates.

      Surface Duo begins receiving its first firmware update for 2021

      Microsoft is rolling out a new firmware update for the Surface Duo, making it the first update in over two months. While the firm had been serving monthly updates for the dual-screened Android device, it skipped the December update owing to the holidays and reportedly due to a tricky bug. Today’s release brings with it a bunch of improvements along with the December and January Android security patches. What it does not bring is the Android 11 update, of which there is no information from the company.

      As has been the case for the past few months, the Duo is getting improvements to address stability issues with touch, possibly still ironing out issues pointed out by early reviewers. There are also improvements to the UI stability, likely to fix crashes or issues with features like App Pairs and the overall stability of the software when moving apps across screens. The changelog is generic in nature and does not divulge much information about the details of the updates.

      Here is the complete changelog of the January 2021 update that brings software version 2020.1211.85:

      As usual, this release only applies to the unlocked version of the device and is rolling out gradually, meaning it will be a while before all users see the update hit their devices. Users that own the AT&T version of the Duo might have to wait slightly longer for these updates. Usually, updates for the carrier variant are served within a week, so the wait should not be too long.

      The company is also slated to make the Surface Duo available to more markets soon. It will be interesting to see what the timeline is for the release, and if the device gets an update to Android 11 by then or even ships with the updated software in those regions.

      Halo: MCC Season 5 of content lands with new Halo 3 and Reach unlocks

      Halo: The Master Chief Collection's journey to PC completed with the arrival of Halo 4 late last year, but 343 Industries isn't finished with updating the game across all platforms just yet. Today, the studio launched the fifth season of content for the multi-game collection, delivering a range of new cosmetic unlocks aimed at Halo 3 and Halo: Reach along with a lightweight MCC update.

      Halo: MCC Season 5 is dubbed Anvil and its battle pass has 100 unique new items for customizing player armor, weapons, and nameplates. These include armor pieces from the Halo Online project finally being implemented to Halo 3 and the cut GRD helmet over to Halo: Reach. The timed seasonal challenges this time offer some interesting rewards as well, including the humorous 'Mister Chief' helmet.

      The free battle pass requires Season Points for unlocking this content as usual, which can be earned from simply ranking up by playing any of the included Halo experiences, as well as completing challenges that refresh daily, weekly, and across seasons. Moreover, all content from battle passes remains a part of the collection even after a season ends, letting players go back and unlock content from previous rounds.

      Today's Halo: MCC update is related to the cosmetic side as well. Players will now find a new toggle in the options menu for disabling or enabling the new skins being added to Halo 3, letting those who prefer the original experience keep it that way. The game already had a similar toggle set up for the new Halo: Combat Evolved skins.

      Halo: The Master Chief Collection Season 5 Anvil is now available for all PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S players. The size of the update will be around 258MB on Steam, 6.3GB on the Microsoft Store PC version, and up to 9.9GB for Xbox consoles.

      In June last year, Microsoft released the 2020 release wave 2 timeline for its Power Platform and Dynamics 365 services. This was the second and final major release wave for the previous year. Today, the Redmond firm has unveiled plans for the first release wave for this year concerning both the aforementioned platforms.

      The 2021 release wave 1 plans provides information on the major enhancements and new capabilities that will be arriving for Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform between April and September. The timeline below showcases a quick overview of how users can expect this rollout to commence over the following months:

      January 27: Release plans unveiled February 1: Early Access available - customers to be allowed to test the features in a non-production environment TBA: Release plans to be made available in 11 additional languages; namely Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, and Swedish April 1: General availability - Production deployments begin, with regional deployments to initiate on April 2 For Dynamics 365, the focus of the new capabilities will center around Marketing, Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Project Operations, Guides, Human Resources, Commerce, Fraud Protection, Business Central, Customer Insights, Customer Voice, and industry accelerators. For the Power Platform, meanwhile, all services falling under its scope including Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power Virtual Agents will be improved upon. Microsoft has also specifically remarked upon new capabilities for the AI Builder and Power Apps portal in Power Apps.
