Pepsi and the others won't be far behind.

Forget cans and bottles, Coca-Cola will be available as single-serve Keurig pods

If you fancy a glass of Coca-Cola, currently you have to hope there?s one left in the refrigerator, either in a can or bottle. But not for much longer. The Coca-Cola Company has just done a deal that will see them offer the ability to make your own Coke on demand at home.

The deal sees Coca-Cola tie up with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, a company it just bought a 10 percent stake in for $1.25 billion and in the process created an easier/different way to buy and drink Coke at home. That deal will see a cold beverage device offered to create single servings of Coke. The drink will be sold in pod form and will likely only be compatible with this one device.

By doing this, Coca-Cola potentially opens up a new market segment for its drink while at the same time cutting costs. Shipping Coke pods is going to be easier than bottles or cans, plus the consumer is adding the water, so transportation costs will also be lower by default on a per serving basis. You can also fit a lot more Coke pods in a shipment than cans therefore increasing the savings even further.

And for the consumer, if the Coke tastes the same as out of a can or bottle, then using the machine could end up being preferable. The pods will probably have a longer shelf life, plus nobody likes carrying those heavy bottles and cans around.

Of course, a lot will depend on price. How much will the cold beverage machine be, and how will the pod pricing compare to just going out and buying some cans? You?d assume they?d be cheaper, but Coca-Cola may think the convenience/novelty is worth a premium.

I will probably be the first in line to buy one of their syrup pods if you can drain the syrup mix out.

I have a SodaStream and so far, have not been too thrilled with the "diet soda" taste to their mixes.

Here's a link to the real thing:

I warn you though, it's not cheap!  This is the stuff bars & restaurants etc use in their soda fountains.

There's a few other places that sell it, but the cheapest I've seen is around $80 for a box.

Wow, clearly they're getting intimidated by Soda Stream in some way. Normally I wouldn't have thought that they would consider it and just thought of the Soda Stream as a gimmick, but since it has gained traction in the past few years and with the way the economy has been and consumers wanting to save money where possible.

Time to get busy with the fizzy!

Soda stream is a gimmick though, people just don't realize it.

it's more costly to buy the syrup and the cannisters than to just buy soda bottles. and their BS commerciels about savign the world ? well most of the world, at leats europe recycles bottles, and we pay more for the bottles and get the money back when we put them in the recycle machine. so most bottles get recycled. In the past witht he thicker bottles the bottles where even re-used untill they where no longer re-usable, but with the new thinner bottles it's more efficient abd better for the enviroment to just recycle.

so outside of making healthier soda by buying 1 kalori per bottle regular mix with only water "juice"(not sure what the english word for it is) there's no reason for it.

and I figure this thing will be much the same, afterall it'll probably taste the same as the cola from the restaurant taps... which is pretty horrible 95% of the time.

A gimmick yes, but one that's been around a bery long time; my family had one back in the 1970's.  Its popularity tends to go in fits and starts.

As for your dilute to taste juice, in the UK, we call that "squash", and many of the general cheapo flavours you can get in the supermarket taste just find in a sodastream.  You're right in the price though, it's a completely false economy given the price of the CO2 canisters.  It's cheaper to just buy the official soda or one of the many fairly palatable copies.

i hope this consumer grade 'cola-syrup' doesn't contain any sweeteners so i could freely use any kind of sweetener of my preference with precise amount i wish to.

It's syrup... It's going to be utterly loaded with sugars or artificial sweeteners (depending if you get regular or diet).

If you want to use your own sweeteners, you're going to have to make it from scratch.

Sam's Club & Costco sell them ... don't get hit with the ridiculous shipping costs.

I don't mean to get too off-topic but, would I save money if I only used it for soda water (i.e. no syrup)? What price would I have to pay for the canisters to save money?

In the UK, 1 single gas cylinder that can do 60 litres is ?10.

I made my own syrup last night from some Kool-Aid drink mix.  It wasn't bad at all.

1 Pack of cool aid,  2 cups of sugar (GASP!), and 3/4 cup of water.  Turn it into a syrup and you don't have all the other garbage in the drinks.  There are plenty of recipes online which make it a better machine. ;)

If you're making your own, why the sugar ?

just use something like these

fun-light_908497411.jpg

1 calori in each bottle, unlike normal non sugar solubles this one actually has taste and it tastes good. Probably the only reason I don't drink litres of cola every day. though Iprefer them non carbonated and don't have a sodastream or similar.

American's can't drink anything unless it's got at least a pound of sugar in it. :p  Fast food has destroyed their palates! ;)

I didn't know Keurig machines also made carbonated drinks. Wouldn't SodaStream have made more sense?

Up to now they don't....not sure where the carbonation is coming from.  And even though they make iced drinks, it comes out boiling ...this doesn't sound like something I want to try, and I love my Keurig.
