Jelly2003
:D (Y) Yeah! Gee *pfft* just Seventy Billion light years wide. Man that is so tight. I wish the money was diverted away from those time / money wasting scientists and maybe spent on finding cures for cancer or AIDS. Really, who gives a flying bass how big the universe is? :| Time wasting??? I think that understanding space etc is important. Granted that curing sickness is too, but not everybody in the world can cure aids can they? I find astronomy fascinating, hardly a waste of time and money. Jelly2003
well, according to this, if i see the north star in one part of the sky, i can go to the polar oposite of hte earth and see the same star at the same angle, use the north star, is it visible in the south? :phttp://rracing.alpha.timdorr.com/images/unv_theory.jpg I seriously doubt it, unless the universe is smaller then our galaxy. Your thinking on the wrong scale. You wouldnt see an individual star twice because it is too small, but you would see our whole galaxy twice perhaps. thuggers
The universe might be finite but I'll bet this thread could be infinate if given the chance ;)EDIT: I have so many ideas, if i posted them I'd waste so much time, so I wont worry. But I would rather an infinate universe i think. if the universe is finite than it is not possible for this thread to be infinite.. evntually all the universes energy would be transversed into the thread and it would collapse creating the ultimo thread universe. now im just talking out of my ass. Hum
 God told me that one fine 'day', the Universe will collapse back in on itself, and we will be Home.
kjordan2001
If you believe in the big bang theory, it actually said that the universe is finite and is always expanding.
Miran
Ok, so if the universe is finate, then it stops at the edge, right? Imagine a ball, suspended in the air infront of you. Now, you are inside the ball, and it is hollow. Now look up and see where the edge of the ball is from the inside. That is the furthest out the ball stretches. So whats beyond the outside of the ball? Space. If the universe in my example was the 'ball' then there has to be something behind it, even if it is just a huge amount of space, that goes on forever. What would you call that space? If it goes on forever, regardless if it is solid matter or not, it is still an entity outside it.Bacicly, what I am trying to say is, if you say the 'Universe is finate' then the universe must be in something that is infinate. Like a lone ball in the middle of an infinate sheet of nothing. Actually, what is outside the boundary of the universe would be nothing - no space, no time. It would be as if before the big bang, simply nothing exists. This is difficult to understand with our human brains, which think in terms of objects being within objects being within objects. This nothingness would not just be black space absent of light; it would consist of neither space nor time - no dimension at all. When they talk about the shape of the universe, they are not talking about it in three dimensions, but in all dimensions including time. One thing I was thinking of was that possibly this nothingness is the same as what is present at the center of a black hole - a rip (in this case an all-encompassing void) in the space-time continuum. If this were the case, it would explain why the universe is expanding at an increasing rate since all matter and light in the universe would be sucked outwards at an ever-increasing speed. This would bring us to the possibility that if black holes can exist in our universe, than perhaps extremely dense (I.e. all matter in the universe) conglomerates of matter (existing at a single point) can exist in this nothingness outside of our universe. Although this seems contradictory since nothingness cannot contain something, yet the equal and opposite contradiction exists in our own universe - how can a universe that exists contain points in space (black holes) that do not exist? Miran
If you believe in the big bang theory, it actually said that the universe is finite and is always expanding. No not really. The modified version reflecting red shift of distant galaxies states that the universe is currently expanding at an increasing rate. This doesn't mean it will continue to do so forever. The more spin the universe has, the greater chance it has of expanding forever, but if that spin is slowing down or will slow down, gravity may yet win over the centrifugal force caused by the spin. It all depends on the amount of matter in the universe and other forces and content still unexplained (like dark matter - which may work in the opposite manner of matter, where outward force would cause an inward velocity). poind
Sounds like the boys at NASA need to dig into a tantalizing 4th grade english book if they think tantalising is a word. Unless for whatever reason the British spelling of the word is correctly used.

JohnsonBox
Can you understand what this NASA's finding means? (1) Stephen Hawking says:"Our universe will end expanding and collapse eventually. " (2) NASA, said early this year:"Nope. We have found universe has been expanding since Big Bang, and it will expand forever, finally collapse though." Okay, dear NASA, we believe you that universe is expanding right now. But: (3) NASA's new finding: Universy is so small, just about 70 bil light year across. Oh oh, dear NASA, we are confused by you now. Has universe ceased its expanding? Or our universe should become bigger and bigger. All these theory and findings seem contradictory one another. ;)

It's too much to comprehend.. you expect something to be in something else... but if theres something on the outside of the ball... then there has to be something on the outside of that..and that, and that.....etc. you'll go on and on till your head starts to hurt... some things we just aren't capable of understanding yet. Blues
Ok guys after reading all this and carefully thinking about it i have made my descision. Next week is finals and I have descided that I will drive to cape canaveral and abduct a space ship from NASA. Upon doing so I will begin my trip to the edge of the universe. Currently I have saved up 30$ in gas money, 4 lbs of lunch meat, 3 loaves of bread, 1 lb of cheeze, and 3 boxes of hostess twinkies, that should tide me over. Upon reaching the edge of the universe I will then pilot the ship back to earth with my findings. Wish me luck, for the next week I am off to find and spread my seed should I not be able to return.
