found how to get the "demo" to work under windows 2000.

ntcompatible.com

1. Extract

nfshighstakes.exe using Winzip to a temporary directory (Known

from now on as "nfshsdir" directory).

2. Run Setup.exe

3. When you get the error message "This game only runs on

Windows 95 or 98" copy the files in the directory

"_ISTMP1.DIR" which is located in x:Documents and

SettingsUser NameLocal SettingsTemp (where "x" is

your Win2000 boot drive/partition and User Name is your user

name) to the nfshsdir directory. Also copy the files in the

directory "_ISTMP0.DIR" which is located in the

"_ISTMP1.DIR" directory to the nfshsdir directory.

4. Click OK to quit the error message.

5. In the nfshsdir directory rename _INS5576._MP to _INS5576.EXE

6. Copy ImageCFG.exe and SetWin95.cmd from the NT

4.0/NT5b2/Win2000b3RC1 CD to the nfshsdir directory.

7. Go to a command prompt, CD to the temporary directory. Type

SetWin95 _INS5576.EXE .

8. Run _INS5576.EXE from the nfshsdir directory.

9. Ignore the error message "Can not run Unicode version of

ATL.DLL on Windows 95. Please install the correct version.

10. Congratulations, you have just installed the Need for Speed

4 Demo in Windows 2000.

To play the game in Direct3D do

the follow:

1. You'll need to have Need for Speed III installed on your

computer (ie.Win98 partition) or your Need for Speed III CD

handy for this to work.

2. Make a backup of the 3DData.dat file in the x:Program

FilesElectronic ArtsNeed For Speed High Stakes Demo3dsetup

directory.

3. Replace the files in the x:Program FilesElectronic

ArtsNeed For Speed High Stakes Demo3dsetup directory with the

ones in your NFS3 Installation or your NFS3 CD.

4. Replace the 3DData.dat file with the backup you made in step

2.

5. Run 3D Device Setup, and choose "Direct3D Device

1". You'll get some error message about this being

untested, ignore it.

6. Run the demo.

further down you'll find a patch is needed to get high stakes to work under win2k, also only works with original CD.

link to patch

1) Download and install that update 2) Create a shortcut to the setup executable from the cd on your desktop. 3) Right click on the shortcut and change properties to run in compatibility mode. 4) After install is complete run game normally. This will not work if you are installing from a burned copy of the game. It has to be the actual retail CD.

hope it works. :s

NFS HS Works fine in 2k. I think i know people who ran it out of the box with the patch 4.45 in XP, I suggest getting the patches.
