Whats the best way to get out of a phone contract?

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to drop AT&T like a bad habit, but I still have like 6 months to go until my contract runs up. I was wondering if you guys know a way to weasel your way out of it? I dont feel like paying $175 if I dont have to. Thanks Guys!

If you think there is truly a way to get out of a contract, think again.

Maybe if you get into a car wreck + broken arms + in coma, ATT will let you out.. It is called unfairness in a contract.. still you will have to compensate ATT one way or another with $175

A friend of mine went for internship in Virgina, and there is no ATT there, guess what? he paid $175 to get out of it..

compare the cost of $175 to the cost of your phone bill for the next 6 months, then pick one.

I used to be an assistant manager at a Sprint Store and believe me, you will not be able to lie your way out of the contract.

Your just gonna have to pay, if you dont then they will file a default aganst your name and you will have trouble getting loans and signing up with other phone companies.

I always avoid phone contracts now, I was stupid enough to lock myself into a contract that was $22 per month, and calls at $1.08 per minute, and that contract lasted 18 months. From now on I buy my phone outright and just sign up on a non-contract plan.

EDIT: As I have said, I work for a finance company and I see many people have trouble getting loans because phone companies file defaults for like $10.

If a default for $10 is a problem then a default for $175 or 6 months worth of phone charges is going to be much worse.

Next time you go for a loan you will probably end up paying the ballance owing to your phone copany so that you can take out a loan.

fake your death or declare bankruptcy

Just a hint, declaring bankrupcy is worse then not paying them. I know Boffa wasnt serious but I just thought that I'd point that out anways.

fake your death or declare bankruptcy

Whenever someone came in saying "My brother has passed away, please terminate his account." You know what we'd have to say in repy?

"Show us the death certificate..."

the 175 dollars is the questionable item here.. usually depending on the state u live in, this amount and how it works varies. some have a flat rate that doesnt change for the life of the contract.. but i know that here in texas with cingular it is prorated by the number of months in the contract and how many are left to fullfill your agreement.

check into that.. it may not be as bad as you think it is. and dont think any other cellular provider is better than the next.. they all have thier problems. and in my opinion its like russian roulette as to whether you get the bullet or not.. i know that i have been with cingular for 3 years and havent had a problem yet. but i imagine some peeps here can give horror stories about them. so .. anyways .. good luck
