Pulagatha
It seems like with Windows 8 that it can be kind of a confusing landscape. There are some programs that have doubles. Picture Viewer. Calculator. Internet Explorer. (I've been calling the double utility programs that provide the same functionality, washware) and I would like to hear from anyone about what they think should be included for the desktop iteration of Windows. Games For Metro seems to be a given. But other than that, what else?

+jamesyfx Subscriber² Posted February 26, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted February 26, 2014 It should probably 'come' with anything that's designed in house at Microsoft, but the user should have the choice of which ones to install upon Installation. Denis W. Veteran Posted February 26, 2014 Veteran Share Posted February 26, 2014 I think the way it is in Windows 8.1 Update 1 is fine. All apps are installed but depending on the form factor of the PC, offer Photo Gallery, Media Player, etc. as defaults, and vice versa for tablets. I don't agree with offering everything up for separate download. Microsoft did that starting with Windows 7, and I still have people thinking Movie Player and Photo Gallery disappeared. It's nice to have a mail client and basic media editing tools out of the box. So at the least, I would keep the Mail, Calendar, and People combo intact. SkyDrive, Photos, and Store are all core apps so obviously they can't go. Apps like Weather and News are useful for me, but I can see why others wouldn't want them. Rest of the apps are a bit spammy IMO as they serve solely to push Bing content (Travel, Fitness/Health).
Max Norris
Eh it's just like the desktop versions, there isn't going to be a right answer as everybody's going to want something different anyways. Throw a few of the better more common ones on and leave it at that (IE the selection's fine as it is), they can add/remove as they see fit. Andre S. Veteran Posted February 26, 2014 Veteran Share Posted February 26, 2014 The first thing I do on a fresh install of Windows 8 is to uninstall all the metro apps via a powershell command so I don't have to rebind all the file associations manually. It's pretty annoying that Windows 8.1 makes it hard to uninstall the Photos app. So, none for me, thanks. DConnell Member Posted February 26, 2014 Member Share Posted February 26, 2014 A windows 7 emulator....... Isn't that the desktop? All of the existing bundled ones, along with desktop versions. Just make it easy to select which opens a particular file.
zhangm Supervisor Posted February 26, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted February 26, 2014 How about just leaving things the way they are, and letting users choose what they want to use, like how every other edition of Windows has worked? i_was_here
I would only want the Metro apps that do not duplicate the functionality of existing built-in desktop apps. I only use the News and Weather Metro apps personally.
cooky560 Veteran Posted February 27, 2014 Veteran Share Posted February 27, 2014 I don't mind which metro apps are available, but I don't see why the user can't be given a choice on first sign in, which un-installs the unwanted apps for disk saving reasons. This can of course be easily changed later since the apps are all available in the Windows Store. I'd also like to see Desktop Apps in the Windows Store like in the OSX App Store at least for a short period to get more users using it. cooky560 Veteran Posted February 27, 2014 Veteran Share Posted February 27, 2014 Well since the bing news app is somehow using 1gb of data, thats 1gb I could use better for my own files for example... Plus, whether I have 1gb storage or 40,000,000,000 PB there's no reason to be callous about efficiency. +LogicalApex and +Majesticmerc 2 Share

BajiRav
I would rather have them install Windows as fast as possible and then remove whatever I don't want (sorta of like how it's been for longest of times). I don't want the installer wasting time on detecting if the user has touch hardware or if the user is metro hater or if the user is power user blah blah. Metro apps are too easy to remove and haven't been a problem since the beginning. DConnell and Dunkleybwoy 2 Share
contextfree
I think it's more likely, if Windows gains the ability to run "metro" apps with "desktop" windowing, that the "desktop" versions of these apps will eventually be removed.

Looking at the functionality difference between the desktop and metro apps this one thing I genuinely hope never happens, I'd rather lose the metro apps and keep the functionality. +Anarkii Subscriber² Posted March 2, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted March 2, 2014 I would say Skype (but it really REALLY needs alot of improvement), and MS Office metro apps. Windows 9 would be awesome if it had Windows + Office bundled together in one neat package. Skype for me because its the only Metro app I use as I can dock it to the side of my screen, something the desktop version cant seem to do :/
