Athletic Running Shoes

Recommended Posts

Hello Neowin Community,

I know that this is not a technical or computer-related topic, so I hope that this is appropriate for this forum. I am interested in purchasing a new pair of athletic running shoes. I do not need them to play basketball or tennis, or any other sports, just strickly running (and walking in them, of course). I am looking to spend within the $50 USD price range if possible, less would be great. I think that paying anything over $70 USD is too expensive for me. I want them to be comfortable to wear, to be able to absorb shock, to relieve any strain on my ankles and shins due to running, and so forth. I also am anticipating them to be able to endure rigorous military training (US Navy OCS), thus desiring a good pair. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

LTHuang

I'd like to consider myself pretty up on shoes...

You said you wanted to play basketball in them. Please don't play basetkball in anything but basketball shoes. They make basketball shoes with supreme ankle support for a reason: Your ankles need support when playing basketball. Many people go out and play some roundball with running shoes or whatnot and minorly to seriously injur themselves.

You aren't going to find a good pair of running (purely running) shoes for less than $80. Whenever I buy running shoes they're at least $100 and sometimes more (depending on season).

Either way you do it, check out www.RoadRunnerSports.com for shoes. They have an advanced shoe-finder that helps you choose the right kind of shoe for yourself. Just because Karma tells me so, also go to www.DealCoupons.com and check out coupons for Roadrunner Sports. You can get a considerable amount of cash discounted off your sub-total.

If you have any questions PM me. I very well might not see this thread again in my life ;)

I'm not a shoe expert in the slightest, but does sound like you're looking for cross-trainers at least.

If you're doing stuff like basketball, tennis, running regularly, should probably buy sport-specific shoes, as they're built differently based upon side vs. forward motion, etc.

I've been running everyday for 17 years and have been wearing strictly New Balance for 10 of those, a hundred bucks is worth it when you consider the pain and expense you will incur later from not having proper support.

I have a seperate pair for bike riding and a pair of cross trainers for everything else. Its worth the expense man.

I'll tell yah also that I went through Infantry school, with a pair of $20 pieces of crap I bought at the PX and suffered for it :pinch:

I always go for quality shoes over cheap ones, cheap ones are nasty and those are pretty pricey you know your getting good quality ones that will last long, look good and support your feet.

As a previous poster said, you really cant go wrong with New Balance. Made for runners by people who know running. Personally, I prefer Asics but thats just me. Their shoes have never done me wrong in the 8 years of military time that I put in. You can find a good pair of either for around 50-60 bucks. I suggest you go try some on and see what fits the best. Also go to a running store if possible. The staff should be pretty knowledgeable on how a running shoe should fit and what type of shoe is best for your body and foot type.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw he didn't want to do anything besides running in these things...

To be honest, everyone has a different stride, running style, etc. etc. The best thing to do is to go to a running store and have them take a look at your run, your foot shape, and all the rest and then they can recommend a proper shoe for you. It might sound retarded or whatever, but if you do a lot of running, there is no other option as running in shoes that aren't right for you will cause nothing but pain, blown out knees, shins, and anything else you can imagine.

I also don't think you will find anything for around $50 that will be any good - 80-90 should definitely get you a decent pair of running shoes. And it's worth it.

as previously mentioned by the right shoe for what you are wanting to do. there is a reason for all the different TYPES of sports shoes.

i mean you wouldnt play tennis in baseball cletes , right? so even if it means multiple purchases ... it does pay off in the long run.

youll perform better and be able to continue enjoying the activities much longer without the consequences.

and dont buy cheap crap.. they are only meant for mowing the grass and painting the house in.. lol
