I am down a couple hundred dollars because I was quite silly and bought a lot of flashy new pieces of technology. I am hoping I have learned my lesson. Nothing else. I haven't seen one person say, here's my PIN number, etc etc. And if there's a billion people on here you don't know, then why are you so interested in their debt problems to be reading all these posts?? Remember, its a voluntary thing to want to post on here. No one has been forced to divulge their debts. And if you look carefully, not everyone who has posted their debts has divulged exactly how much they owe. Some people have left it at 'I have debt'. Maybe someone can provide an experience to help another out? Maybe someone like myself can give input for someone who has a question or is worried about what they're going through? And you're the moron...judging the "billion people on here" you don't even know. There's a ton of questions I still have about money management, credit reports/history/balancing, debt consolidation...you know, life's common problems that EVERY single person must deal with. Nobody posted a bank account, nobody compares themselves, and certainly nobody wants to read about how high and mighty you are to everyone else. And the internet is a perfect place to go for answers. People, such as myself, don't have time to sit through a 5 month money management course at college, so people ask questions and get the answers a hell of a lot faster. As long as you don't reveal TOO much.

Osiris
I cant speak for UK or US, but I detest university students who go out and protest or spend their time windging and bitching about the cost of university education. In Australia the Australian tax payers still pay over 2/3 our university fees. So given that massive figure, aussie uni students bitching that their hard done by the governments HECS are tossers, ill informed or too lazy to look into the facts. I can handle a few tens of thousands of dollars debt knowing that every tax paying australian is forking out over 2/3 of my degree costs.

I couldn't crawl out with that...hence the bankruptcy. I was very happy to finally pay off my student loans after 11 years though. Instead of paying early I spent the money. Stupid. Hopefully I'll rebound with a better spending habbit!!! :x

Jelly2003
I avoid debt, so currently I owe $0. (that doesnt mean I don't spend money, I just save for it rather then take out finance, im definatley not a tight ass) Of course my 1984 Subaru Touring Wagon isn't going to last foever (and I am sick of driving it) so I might have a car loan soon (I'd have a new car now, but I dont make enough money to afford loan repayments). Eventually I'd like my own home too (hello Mortgage). But currently : Jelly Debt = $

poind
The U.S., at least, has had debt as an almost cultural thing for a decent while -- people thinking they can turn money into even more, and lenders finding the people that can more valuable than the people that can't. That having been said, I've seen some pretty big messes as people accumulate debts (oh boy student loans are *great*), credit cards get tossed willy-nilly at students (what do they *really* care if they can charge 20+% interest for awhile and someone eventually goes belly up), etc., etc. Last I heard recently, average debt for folk finding they need to declare bankruptcy (skyrocketing in general), is at about a year's salary, depending on the individual, and it's increasingly not people who've spent recklessly. This does mean an increasing number of people in debt in the 10s of thousands due to no *real* "fault" of their own. Anyway, won't comment personally on people I know one way or the other, but debt is commonly getting into the 10s of thousands, a bad medical care system / cut benefits are adding to expenses, U.S. personal bankruptcies are at an all time high (again, without reckless spending), and educational system with its expenses consistently *flagrantly* outpacing inflation isn't helping a lot of current younger folk. (I will say I think U.S. post-secondary education is going to hit a very cold, hard wall within the next couple of years. The lifelong student loans I've seen people saddled with are ridiculous, the college system itself is grossly inefficient and unaccountable, and student loans themselves aren't even dischargeable in bankruptcy. There's a major mess brewing, if not already boiling over. Don't know if the initial question was asked for such reasons, but....)
