....
Interesting phone scam here..... 809 Area code If you call from the US, you will apparently be charged $2,425 per-minute. Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24,100.00.
dougkinzinger
I've heard of that. But, I've also heard that most carriers (phone companies) have wised up when it comes to that sort of thing; the sort of thing which used to be possible when you could have red boxes, blue boxes, brown boxes, etc., for bypassing certain phone switch restrictions. Course, then all the switches went digital, and no, I don't mean 'digital' as in IP, I mean 'digital' as in not manual. Long time ago.
BroChaos Veteran Posted December 3, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 3, 2003 if you read the at&t link, they say it's only like $3 a minute, and the number is just exaggerated for effect...

bayrider
I hate it when companies keep in queue for ages, do they do that on purpose to get money off you cause my isp keeps me on hold for like 20mins avg until i get someone i highly doubt ur dialing a 1-900 number (pay per minute) for your ISP. They most probably have a free calling number for the entire country so i doubt theyre keeping you on the line on purpose

KC
I hate it when companies keep in queue for ages, do they do that on purpose to get money off you cause my isp keeps me on hold for like 20mins avg until i get someone Well in the US if you call a 1800 1888 or 1866 1877 its toll free (not really though) most companies offer these numbers to there customers for support. Well have you ever wondered why when call in for support it seems the person wants to get you off the phone? Its because something called "call times" the longer the caller is on the phone the more it costs the company. Yes some one does pay long distance charges for those "toll free" numbers. Its a little more complex then that when it comes to call centers and outsourcing but thats what it really boils down to. Also please don't abuse your customer service rep, they don't make the policy's, and most of us wish we could help every one the way the wanted, but its not possible. Ironman273
The 809 area code is in Dominican Republic. A lot of Caribbean countries use US area codes instead of their own country codes. I call Dominican Republic a lot for work and I can tell you it's nowhere near $2,400 per minute. Also, when I place a call there, the call is charged to my phone bill. My customer over there gets no monetary benefit from my calls. The only one who benefits is the phone company... It's not like a 900 line where the money goes to the person you're calling. It's like callling any other are code in the US, except the fee is higher bvecause it's international.
