Nintendo is #1

December 02, 2003 - Occupying third place in console sales, Nintendo's September 25 price cut to $99 seemed like an act of desperation. Even though GameCubes were flying off shelves in record numbers during the first week of the price drop, many speculated that this was simply a quick surge in reaction to the price drop and sales would soon return to normal numbers. However, Nintendo has surprised many with its steady GameCube sales that have shown no signs of tapering off -- even after two months.

Today, Nintendo announced that its console had surpassed the sales of the Playstation 2, which makes the GameCube the top selling console for Thanksgiving week. According to internal sales data (not NPD), Nintendo's console sold more than half a million units during the week of November 24 (which is almost as much as its Game Boy Advance that tallied 600,000 units over the same time period).

"All along, our business plan for this year was to maximize consumer interest and sales during the fourth quarter," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "But frankly, we're overwhelmed by how successful we've been. Our price cut of Nintendo GameCube has ignited sales to the degree that it may turn out to be the best-selling console for the entire month of November. We're tracking to sell more systems in the last eight weeks of the year than we did in the previous 10 months combined."

Hopefully, this positive trend will continue throughout the holiday season, fueled by Nintendo's recent release of Mario Kart: Double Dash and 1080: Avalanche -- and the upcoming Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Pokemon Colosseum. Stay tuned to IGNcube for more Nintendo-centric updates.

I wouldn't be surprised... that's one hell of a deal. Three of my friends bought a system over the break because it was so cheap and they loaded up on games and controllers too. Big money for the big N.

I'm wondering how long they can keep selling like that though. Probably for the next few weeks sure but after that...?

Also if you haven't read this interview check it out... it's pretty good: http://www.egmmag.com/article2/0,4364,1364727,00.asp

Quote from that article:

"So the question for us is: How do we maximize the GameCube's existence for the next two to two and a half years?

We think the price drop to $99 was an important step in that process. It just made it accessible to people who were waiting for prices to come down, or people who said "You know what? I really want to play Zelda: The Wind Waker, but I already own another system." We see people buying it for $99 as a second system; potentially someone who has owned a PlayStation 2 for three years already and know that they have another two or so years to wait. They're saying "I can open myself up to another library of exclusive games here with GameCube.""

That's so true. It was the reason I picked up my own Cube

I dont think the sales will drop off too bad for awhile now, 100$ is much more affordable, definatly cheap enough for a 2nd system so you can play the nintendo favorites like Zelda and Mario Kart(and quiet a few others too) after they get everyone buying the system so cheap, there are lots of must have games for the game cube, and they make the money off the software anyways.

Yeah.. the Gamecube is ?99 in the UK (which is about $170 - as usual we get ripped off totally) which is still a pretty good price for a console over here.

God.. actually just working that out its nearly double the price over here for the gamecube. What gives. Our VAT is 17.5% but I can't think of any other reason / explanation why its so much more expensive over here.

Goddamn rip-off Britain!!:((:((

I thought about going to Walmart and getting one for $79. $100 is still too much for a console that only has 2 games I am going to play(Metroid and Zelda)

Then I did the MATH. $79 + $49(Zelda) + $49(Metroid) = $177

SO I stopped went back to the XBox isle and got me Project Gotham Racing 2 and Knights of the Old Republic, saved aroud $100. Woot!

Sorry, but regardless what price they set it at, there is no online gaming and not many games to attract a young adult.

heck, I even considered getting a Gameboy istead of the console since they are priced the same really.

Yeah, they are number one, in sales this week/month but that won't last for long, their pricing scheme reminds me of Sega right before they stopped production, and I have not heard much about any AAA titles in the future which is another reason I didn't buy. No present games that interest me, no future games that interest me, a couple of last season's games, and developers are starting to pull ports from the gamecube console. Not very good indicators.

thats okay boobless.. i think its safe to say that clearly not everyone is cheap and shares his opinion, otherwise gamecube wouldn't be doing so well

What games would those be, for your young adult, Britney Spears Strip Poker? ;)

Seriously, it's about what you like to play, not what age group it's aimed at. I'm turning 33 and I would rather play the Nintendo offerings than most of the other console games.

With regards to the types of games that Nintendo release on the Gamecube..

Reminds me of some people I know who only watch films that are rated 18 / are really violent. Beats the hell out of me why.

Just because you are an adult now, it doesnt mean every game has to be violent or adult in some way.. I still enjoy firing up games like Pilotwings and Super Mario World on the SNES emulator. They just don't make em like they used to ;) :)

I think Nintendo made a smart move. Nintendo is my favorite console company and it will be that way until Nintendo goes down ( Which will never happen ). Whoever says it is a kiddie console is a ****ing dumbass. Don't our your friends to catch you playing Resident Evil, do we? :argh:
