Hum
:o You don't know. It's a gamble. Try to buy from those with high ratings and high previous sales. You can look for ones that go thru a third party who hold the money till the product is delivered. But facts like 1 in 5 auctions for electronics/computer stuff are a fraud, makes me not want to try buying off of e-Bay
dreamz Veteran Posted December 4, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 4, 2003 i've never had a problem with ebay. buy from highly rated sellers and maintain good communication, and never try to go outside the ebay scheme. there are lots of frauds with outside transactions. xpablo
First of all it's Buyer Beware, how do you know what your buying is whats described. Look @ the sellers feedback rating, if it's good with all positive feedback, it's pretty good chance you wont get ripped off. some guy with very high positive feeback, did try too rip me off once, but I got very nasty on him. Which almost cost him his job, not too mention the engagement to his Fiance... I wont go into details but, he paid up pretty quick when he reliased , just how much info I had dug up on him online. fool tried selling the high priced item I bought on ebay aproximately 2 weeks after I won the auction. Paypal helped too ;)
a1kashur
Ebay is great. Just use your common sense and you'll be alright. :) (Y)
maplecookie Veteran Posted December 4, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 4, 2003 Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is! Buy from sellers who have no negative ratings, or if they do the rating was given to them for something silly. ALWAYS read the reasons why the ratings were given if they do not have a 100 for their rating. Basic things like that will really help keep you from getting ripped off

Cowpie
Your facts about 1/5 auctions being fraud on ebay are all faulty, show me proof to back up that number...

poind
Others have already said some very good stuff. Do check the feedback (not just numbers, but what was said), of people you're thinking of dealing with. Also beware of those who haven't sold much (someone can get lots of feedback from just multiple minor buys, for example -- doesn't mean they *sell* responsibly). Also keep in mind, depending on purchase, Ebay does provide its own limited guarantees (usually for purchases over about $25 or so). Be familiar with guidelines regarding the time period you're allowed in which to file complaints, etc. **Whenever** possible, utilize a credit card somehow, be it via Paypal, BidPay, directly, whatever. Should something go wrong, you can still get things handled through credit card pretty readily as long as you keep documentation of transactions. Be *real* cautious about things like outright money orders, or if seller seems to be flaky at *any* point (like not responding to questions while auction is in progress). It's actually pretty surprising how well Ebay can work overall, but it's also *very* necessary not to fall for things that seem *far* too good to be true, especially if someone has little or no feedback. In my personal view, there's a huge amount of stuff one can find on Ebay that can readily be found elsewhere, often even cheaper. A lot of people don't bother to price-compare or just like feeling they've "won" rather than "bought" something. There were once a ton of great deals on Ebay, but it's now very often just balanced itself with markets in general. Ebay *is* best for collectible-type stuff that you might have a harder time finding in general. Anyway, check seller feedback in-depth, and use a credit card when paying if possible. The legitimate / honorable sellers do surprisingly outnumber the scams that can happen, and scammers do tend to be pretty flagrant. If in doubt, start emailing a seller while auction is in progress and see how well they answer questions. Should someone contact you and try to get you to buy something unofficially / not on Ebay / without accountability, do NOT do it.
