Does anyone else think Sony should make the PS3 (lousy name by the way) more a gaming console and less a multi-functional unit? I mean, the whole reason Nintendo is able to drop it's product price to $99 is because they designed a system specifically for gaming - no DVD, CDs, etc. Granted, the PS2 was a big step in the DVD market, but by the time this PS3 comes out, damn near everyone will already have some form of DVD player. And, in theory, if they design it to just be a gaming system, it might cut the cost down by $50 or so, which was a reason Nintendo was able to cut their price of the GameCube to $99.

We'll see, I guess. Everything is just pure speculation at this point.

Personally, I think Sony should STOP making consoles all together. I hated PS and now I hate PS2. When the original Playstation came out, I immediately went out and got a Saturn cause prices came down. Long story short, PS is still around while Sega stopped making Saturns. I loved that system.

4 years later... I get the Dreamcast, by far my favorite console to date (and I have had a lot them during my time). I still play it. Why did I say, "still play it?" Because PS2 killed Sega's sales and hence ended the DC.

Modern day... I have an Xbox and I love it. Not as great as the DC, but it rocks. Anyway, PS2 is still around (WHY?!?!) and all the good games go to it instead. Plus, all the great multiplayer games only get online play for PS2 - yes, I'm talking to you !@#ing EA.

I think the reason Sony made the PS2 with DVD capabilities is because they were planning on releasing games on DVD's instead of just plain CD's. I think they'd obviously continue that with the next system since DVD's hold much, much more information and they'll need the space.

Now, whether or not they use that just for the games or actually continue to allow people to watch movies on it remains to be seen.

I didn't mind that they made it multifunctional...if only it stayed that way. I've had my PS2 stop playing DVD's once and had it repaired. Worked fine for a while, now just recently it won't read any CDs meaning no games that I've got, and randomly decides it doesn't want to read a DVD for a while. That kind crap has to be addressed because I know I'm not the only one.

Unfortunately, Sony has stated that one of thier major pushes to recover losses from last quarter is to introduce more intigrated gear

You know a laptop w/ a camera, laser pointer, dvd burner, PS2 controller slot, universal remote and memorystick toothbrush adapter

What it really means is that they are looking for any excuse not to drop thier pricing... PS2 is cool and all but it's been out along time - where's the price break? Besides there was a time there were they dominated the market but this lame pricing and the fact that it takes them a thousand years to put out a new system is letting XBox and GameCube get stronger and stronger followings...

Sony should stop with adding **** to their console and make it a console that won't **** up after a certain while. A lot of people are having to have their PlayStation 2 repaired because it will not read DVDs and a lot of people complain about when standing their PlayStation 2 vertical, it scratches the game discs. I'm just tired of Sony.
