livinglegend911
I was wondering if there Is a command prompt to fix a black screen with just a cursor. The computer only boots to a black screen and wont boot into safe mode. I do have the recovery disc.
+Warwagon MVC Posted April 9, 2014 MVC Share Posted April 9, 2014 This is called the black screen of death. Google it there are a BUNCH of different causes. This can be a bugger to diagnose and fix. If it is Vista or 7 you may want to boot to the recovery console and try rolling the computer back via system restore to a time when it didn't happen. Nick H. Supervisor Posted April 9, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted April 9, 2014 Which operating system are you running, Windows 7? What happens if you hit F8 when booting, then under the advanced boot options you select Enable Low Resolution Video? You mention that you have a recovery disk, can you not use that to repair Windows? Have you made any changes to the computer recently? Updated drivers? I don't know if that helps any, I just found this Microsoft Community question that seems to have the same issue as you. Any further information that you could provide about the siuation would be useful for us. ;)
LaP
This can happen if your computer is connected to two screens and the desktop is extended and the two screens are not close to each other (one screen is a TV and the other screen is a monitor in a different room). When the desktop is extended on the secondary screen you might only see a black background with nothing but the cursor. If the secondary screen is the monitor and the primary screen the TV then you might think the PC is not working properly. To resolve this unplug the screen you are not using right now (usually your TV) then set the right screen (monitor) as the primary one. Then replug the TV and configure windows corretly to the multi monitors setting you actually want.
livinglegend911
This was on a windows vista machine. I tried everything, wont boot in safe mode, pressed shift 5 times, tried to repair. Nothing seems to work. I'm going to just install a fresh copy of windows 7 on another drive and hang this drive to transfer data. thank you all for the help
