new g5's

Recommended Posts

ibm (supposedly) has 90nm 2.6ghz g5's... so the rumor is now, that apple will be releasing dual 2.6's in january, with the low-end mac moving up to 2ghz. it makes sense, as jobs promised mac users 3ghz coming this summer.

being 90nm, there is also speculation that apple may finally be able to put the g5 into the xserve and powerbook.

it also appears that ibm has made the largest mhz jump EVER.

will this be the mac that defeats, without question, anything the amd and intel world has to offer?

Don't hold your breath until it comes out, if it is so soon, that is.

Even being 90nm, it's still bound to run pretty hot. I'm still saying PowerBook G5's next year (late 2004, early 2005), and Xserves probably earlier than that.

Sounds speedy, wonder what the price tag for that is going to be?

I'm hoping that it will be the same price as the current G5's, and the current G5's be pushed back a bit.

But the Dual 2.6GHz with an unconfirmed 30" Cinema Display is going to cost quite a bit. I doubt you'll see much change from $5000. Only time can tell.

xServes can be cooled pretty well, regardless of how hot they run, because while it's meant to be in a server environment, they don't have to really worry about how loud the machines are, so they don't use fans in the machine to cool the processors, but instead they a few blowers to quickly distribute air. Suck cool air in and blow it out quick. This is why they are very loud, but they do get the job done, so G5 xServes should come soon.

Dual G4's are more likely at this point for the laptops and iMacs. I see no reason why you'd want such a powerful processor in a laptop, so dual g4's should be good enough.

IBM is bringing out another CPU (750GX or something) which is going to be a G4 on steriods with a low voltage/heat rating.

This will probably be used in future iBook's and maybe iMac's...

Next-generation G5s to top out at 2.4GHz: Several optimistic predictions of PowerMac G5s shipping early next year (quite possibly as soon as Macworld SF in January - less than two months away) have recently speculated that the top-end system would offer CPUs clocked at 2.6GHz. Although IBM is sampling 90nm PowerPC 970s at this speed (and as high as 2.8GHz in a handful of cases) already, Apple sources have repeatedly issued strong statements to the effect that most 970s used in the next round of PowerMacs will continue to be the 130nm version of the CPU.

Those reports suggest that the next-gen PMG5s will include a single-processor 2.0GHz entry-level model, a Dual 2.2GHz midrange model, and a Dual 2.4GHz model. Out of those, only the 2.4GHz model is expected to employ the 90nm version of the 970 according to the reports. A mid-year update will bring 2.6 and 2.8GHz 90nm 970's, followed shortly by the Powerbook G5 (1.6, 1.8, and 2.0GHz) based on the same chips.

Not bad, not bad at all. Now all we need is a G5 in the PowerBooks. Too bad they can't put them in yet.

Ah, no. There's no way Apple will put dual G4s in a powerbook. They run hot enough as it is with just one. Unless they revamp the G4, which they won't do, it won't happen. More than likely, Apple will use the updated G4 that should be out soon to allow for greater speeds.

How to lose credibility: Post stuff from MacOSRumors.

Luckily, AppleInsider has posted the same news, and they look to be accurate with their contacts about this stuff.

Given their past, I wouldn't put AppleInsider any higher up than MacOSRumors. All that AI has done is repost what others have thought, post the obvious, or post the absolute rediculous. If it's not on ThinkSecret or MacRumors, it's probably not gonna happen.

i agree that they will never put dual g4's into the powerbooks.

two g4's have to run hotter than 1 g5, i don't really see why it wouldn't be that way. also, if you have ever looked at the insides of a 15" pbook, you will understand that there really is no space for another processor.

i'm guessing maybe 1 more single processor g4 update (1.5, 1.33, 1.25) for the pbooks and probably g5 pbooks with the introduction of the 3ghz g5s.

then again this is all speculation anyways.

There's a big difference between Macrumors reporting something another site said, and macrumors reporting what their sources have said. In those links, AI is just regurgitating what every other rumor site has posted. They change it just enough so they aren't accused of copying other's reports.
