new g5's

Recommended Posts

MacRumors is a great source, yes it is rumours...but, they are incredibly accurate. Last year I monitored their site and 9 times out of 10 - they have been accurate with release dates and hardware specs.

30" Cinema Display - possible, but unofficial

IBM PowerPC 970FX 2.0GHz-2.6GHz - possible, but unofficial

The CPU's are the most likely, the 30" is a rumour...but they're sources are 9/10 accurate. So as I said before, only time can tell.

Hopefully we'll see the new iMac on the 24th too. Rumour / Speculation says it may be a G5 iMac with a silver finish instead of the current white one. And also running up to 2.0GHz, or at least the 1.6-1.8GHz...in any case, if this comes true then I'll be getting that instead of the PowerMac (price dependant of course) ;-)

the only competition for the g5 was the fastest dual g4's... which you can't even buy anymore : ninja : tricky apple.

i think once apple can get the g5's through it's lineup, it'll look like this:

no more g3. ever.

g4: emac, ibook.

g5: pmac (duh?), pbook, imac, xserve.

two g4's have to run hotter than 1 g5, i don't really see why it wouldn't be that way. also, if you have ever looked at the insides of a 15" pbook, you will understand that there really is no space for another processor.

While the 15" might not have enough room, I'd be willing to bet that the 17" could squeeze in a second processor. And a dual G4 (at say, 1.25Ghz) is still going to be faster on most tasks than a single 1.6Ghz G5. The large amounts of aluminum in the 17" would make for an excellent heat sink as well, if done right.

They are not going to put Dual G4's in laptops, lol.

i don't see why apple would even waste time they could be using to get the g5 into the powerbook on trying to get another processor into a powerbook.

the 17"s don't have any extra space either really. all of the "extra space" is taken up by larger speakers and the ports.

Well, they don't actually have to wast any time at all. It's all a waiting game on IBM to get their processors to not dissipate so much heat (even the new G5 at 62 Watts is a real scrotum scorcher). So, their R&D team for the PB is basically twiddling their thumbs while IBM brings down the heat. Since they're looking at extreme cooling/power solutions for the G5 anyways, don't you think that applies to a dual G4 laptop as well?

While I don't think it's likely we'll see a dual g4 laptop, I can't totally rule it out and wouldn't be surprised if Apple released one...

It just doesn't seem like a smart move because even if they worked out the heat issues for it, they would have to reengineer the whole inner workings of it to fit two processors. It seems like it would be smarter to just place faster g4's in there periodically for now until the g5 will work out.

I love it when Mr Secretive Steve Jobs makes everyone guess

Rumors about the 750GX but nothing really concrete about it being reported

G5 in a laptop when the "980" comes

Dual G4 if the 750GX is cool enough. (Anyone works for IBM here?)

I love heavy multitasking

while it is true that the current g5 runs at over 60 watts, lets not forget that this number is for a 130nm chip. the 90nm chip is reported to run at 12, compared to the current g4's 10.

why waste power putting 2 10w g4 chips in a pbook, when we can get more performance (and better battery length) from a 12w 2ghz g5?
