No sound from USB speakers upon resume from sleep

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I recently bought a pair of USB speakers.  They have fantastic sound but I do appear to be having a problem with them.

They don't work if I wake my machine from sleep, but they do when starting the machine from cold or waking up from hibernation.

They are the selected device in the Sound applet launched from  the quick launch volume icon, and the sound level bar does move as though something is playing.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea what to do to fix it?

Thanks!

Should've given more detail, but didn't think it relevant at the time.

The speakers are actually plugged into a hub, the hub being my monitor (Dell U2711).

I tried disabling power management on the USB Root Hubs (all 7 of them listed in Device Manager) but it didn't help at all.

It seems that when resuming the monitor wakes up (and therefore the USB sockets are given power) when the desktop shows but there is no sound.  If I switch off the monitor and switch it on again I get sound back.  It's not the ideal workaround but it at least means I don't have to restart the machine.

When coming back from hibernate, I assume because the monitor wakes up before the desktop, the speakers are already powered when the desktop shows and therefore it isn't a problem.

I need to check whether the same is true if I plug the speakers directly to the computer - but I really don't want to do that for cable management reasons.

Any suggestions?
