Windows 8.1 U1 -- can't enter safe mode

Recommended Posts

So I followed Jose_49's suggestion, though the thought of booting into Ubuntu and just deleting AeroGlass folder and seeing what happens crossed my mind anyway. I boot into Ubuntu, and I can't even access the filesystem. The reason being Windows 8's fastboot and the way it shuts down and restarts. This might even explain why dafin0's suggestion didn't work, and why I couldn't even get to the lockscreen (got a blank screen on each boot).

Managed to fix this first by googling the errors, used ntfprogs and ntfsfix. Instead of deleting AeroGlass folder, followed these instructions from Neowin (downloaded new files and copied them over), rebooted, Windows reported it was fixing the filesystem, lasted a second, and now it's back and running. Not only that, but I even have working AeroGlass now.

Still, why couldn't they just make a normal key press work for safe mode is beyond me. I'll mark Jose_49's post as solved, thanks a lot to everyone for their suggestions.

If I could enter Normal Mode, I wouldn't even need safe mode...

Sorry! I thought you are able to use normal mode, anyway I think I could find the trick after some testing,., I could enter the recovery or advanced options by forcing the PC to shutdown using physical button then after starting, Quickly pressing F9 and the options appear, I hope it gonna work for you

NB: As I said pressing F9 after a normal shutdown will not work, Force the PC to shutdown using physical button, then start > quickly pressing F9, if it didn't worked retry till it works =)

That was one of the suggestions I saw, booting into recovery media stick, I even made one on the other computer, but the thing is the option for Startup Settings was simply gone. Probably has to do with the filesystem lockup.

EDIT:

This is the screen in the recovery media that I need to get to in order to change startup settings and enable safe mode. Instead of "Startup Settings," I had an icon for changing UEFI settings.

And a final update on my side, I wouldn't recommend that AeroGlass fix I linked to in my last post, I only got transparent borders, in the end decided to uninstall it until the author updates it.

you need to add in the registry entries (listed in the guide tab on the website) manually right now to get all the effects

If you computer is not even booting up, then an installation media can only help you out.

If your computer boots then you can try opening the charm bar > Settings > Change PC Settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery > then click on advanced startup and follow the screens
