Science project?

BEC Bose-Einstein Condensate was what your friend told you about; its an excellent topic.

Ahh yes. I've researched a little more, and I seen that name appear more than once, but I wasn't sure. Do you know if there are any videos or pictures of it in action, or if it's just something that you can only tell is happening by the computer?

Thanks.

Its been done in reality; I am not sure if there is multimedia on the internet; look into contacting the respective institutions.

you could do demonstrations on predictability of heating closed systems. start with a turkey baster, rip off the nozzle, drill a hole in the side, put a lantern striker in the hole, fill with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and plug the hole with a ping pong ball.

then tkae them out to the track and make a potato launcher.

etc....

You can always do a fuel cell.

There's lots of documentation and stuff.

Bose einstein condesate are kinda interresting though i don't know much about them.

My chem proff made all kinds of explosives ranging from loud room shaking ones to contact explosives. Nowadays, you probably don't wanna do something like that though its really really cool stuff.

shape memory alloys - got me to regional science fair the first year and graphing calculator the second year (8th grade) had I continued and recieved the same award as I did in 8th grade it would have been a summer job worth $3000 through the Jefferson Lab

for a science scholarship, my friend and i did:

made a spectrophotometer, a device that analyzes the spectrum

this included:

designing a circuit diagram

programming the microcontroller

interfacing the microcontroller with a laptop

getting the servo rotating correctly so it can view the whole spectrum

  BURNING STUFF

yeh, it was a 50 page report and a 7 minute speech

we were asked to present our findings in the journal of applied chemistry, we havent yet, but we will

it was the best project submitted, however, grades were worth 70% and projects 30%, the winner was on 90%, i was on 75%

so i lost

u could do that, but its alot of work, might lift ur grade a little tho

OR, OH GREAT IDEA GREAT IDEA

do a project on phase changes, in particular sublimination, changing from a solid to a gas with no liquid phase

a) buy some dry ice

b) get lots of empty softdrink bottles with their lids

c) put some dry ice in the bottle, put some water in the bottle

d) throw it and wait :shifty: :shifty: :D

we did it in chem, right next to the admin block, a few days after a terrorist threat was announced to the nation :shifty: everyone ran to the windows, it was insanely loud for such a simple explosive :D needless to say we havent done anymore fun experiments this year :(

we made heaps of bombs and explosives in year 10 chem tho (im in year 11)

Touch Powder - also a good project

Materials:

Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4), Iodine pellets ( I )

Filter paper

Method:

Mix Iodine pellets and Potassium Permanganate

Leave to sit for a few minutes - letting the iodine begin to disolve in the potassium permanganate solution

(I think this is how u do it)

pour solution through filter paper, remove iodine pellets (if any remain) and leave paper to dry

if you did it properly, then when the paper is dry, if there is a loud noise or impact on the paper, then it will explode in a cloud of purple smoke

Ideas:

pour across road and leave to dry, waiting for an unsuspeting car or cyclist :shifty:

pour on a doormat

oh yes, project, umm, just look at why it happens, do some eequations and stuff yeh :s great fun tho :D

i know many other things that ive done in chem, so if you want any more formulas / experiments, just ask here or PM me :innocent:

Though you say it's "taken" / you don't want it, there's been some quite recent stuff regarding artificial diamond formation under pressure that's indistinguishable from natural stuff (and we're not talking cubic zirconia or whatever it's called). Quite interesting, especially as they can do otherwise very rare diamonds (like colored ones) for markedly lesser cost.

Don't know if it would fully qualify for what you're doing, but there's also recent stuff related to nicotine proven as prevention against Alzheimer's and other brain diseases. Technically a chemical issue, but again, don't know if it's what you're looking for. Interesting regardless.
