Fusion
Last night I was thinking just how awesome technology is. 10 years ago I was staring at a black screen with some green characters on it. I think it had 2mb of RAM. Now, I am sitting in my living room typing on a laptop that is never slow and weighs about 4lbs. With advances in wireless internet, there really is no reason to be plugged in at all. Then my battery warning came on. Lol, so much for that. But what if there was some way to make wireless electricity! I mean just think about it. If a device could have a battery that was simply there just to power the wireless device, but was charged just like a car battery, with the electricity coming in to keep it charged, the rest of that device could run on wireless electricity. If it was employed all over the world, nothing would be impossible. Electric cars, just think of the possibilities. Enough rambling.
+StevoFC MVC Posted December 6, 2003 MVC Share Posted December 6, 2003 there are watches and things that power themselves. most are run with solar power though.
bayrider
ive seen something on wireless power sources on dave chalk computer show in Canada... i think its www.chalk.com or .ca ive told a couple ppl about this and they told me it was impossible, maybe i missunderstood what he demonstrated.. but im 90% sure he was fiddeling around with a wireless power source which powered everything in a 5ft radius
kairon
Yeah, its called lightning. (a friend of mine told me the same thing when i mentioned wireless power supplies) :p
Knight'
Wireless electricy? Wouldn't that be incredably wasteful? Just think about all the engy wasted whilst you don't have anything using it. And wouldn't cause buildups of electricity it metalic objects in the surrounding vacinity? This could be potentionally hazardous. Electric cars on wireless energy? No, that would require so much engery it's untrue! Especially over wireless. Sorry, it's a nice concept, but totally impractical. I've thought of this before, as many other people have, but then soon realised how impractical it is.
hoyablue
I thought of that too, but there is no way to selectively shoot electricity at a specific product, you'd have to do it in a radius. The amount of electricty required to power such items as a laptop etc. and shot into a radius would be more than enough to shock you.
threetonesun
Hmm, kinetic engery laptops could be interesting. Just shuffle your legs around a bit to power your computer :D
zhangm Supervisor Posted December 6, 2003 Supervisor Share Posted December 6, 2003 It is not an impossibility to have wireless power. A few years ago, there was some serious study done in hopes of curbing the energy crisis. A proposal was made to deploy numerous satellites with massive solar collectors, which would be able to harness the full power of the sun's light, without being filtered through the atmosphere. Of course this then brought up the problem of getting all that energy back to earth. The idea was to "beam" it down, in coherent streams of microwave energy. This, of course, raised a ruckus with environmentalists, and anyone interested in self-preservation. They promptly objected to the notion of streams of microwaves raining down from the sky, no doubt recalling memorable events involving a microwave and some small living mammal... Yes, coherent beams of microwaves...it would have worked, had life not been so adamant about not wanting to be microwaved.
.will
wouldn't it shock you terribly? its like sticking your finger into an electrical socket

Explicative
This is what Tesla wanted to do, needless to say he never worked it out. Of course, why bother with wireless electricity when we have the sun? We just need highly efficient solar cells that can store lots of energy for a long time. Knight'
LOL Relativity_17, you are extremely funny! Didn't they think of beaming it down on the north pole? There's minimal human life there.

quigley0
I remember seeing something on the learning channel about "wireless electricity". It was based off of experiments my Tesla (like the coils in command in conquer!). The government wanted to use it as a weapon, but I think the power lost in the transfer was enormous. I think some ridiculous number of energy, like 90% was lost transfering electricity from a coil to a target. But, that was 70 years ago!
Elliott
They've just about developed it I believe. It uses a magnetic field and with a chip on the other appliance (battery of the appliance), it can send a power signal to it. Too bad it's only in a certain radius of the originating pad, or it would be hazardous.
justfornow
This would only become even vaquely efficient if it utilized instantaneous demand-pull, which is only (theoretically) possible at the quantum level via entanglement. So my vote is No, not possible.

So my vote is No, not possible. It is possible with microwaves, but like someone has already posted, you're basically sending out beams of highly concentrated energy, which fries most biological life forms pretty easily. It might be OK for low-powered devices though. Most of the newer (and insanely small) RFID chips don't have batteries; they use the power from the recieved ID transmissions, which use radio frequency (hence Radio Frequency Identification Device), as the power source to transmit/retransmit/relay. Radio frequency can't carry nearly as much energy as microwaves, but that right there is proof that "wireless power" does in fact work in normal conditions. djgramma
I think what jagedEdge is talking about is the Splashpad? Not extactly wireless but you just plop it on the pad and it recharges your electronics. I heard you don't even need to plop it on there, just "hover" the component over the pad and an electromagnetic field is used to charge the devices. Rather cool and a nice step forward for wireless electricity. Cheers

neowin_hipster
An AM radio can work entirely without electricity. Wireless power is totally feasible but not to power what you guys probably wan't. And at 60 Hz you'ld need a really big ass antenna to get it airborne. The antenna needs to be half the wavelength IIRC. Can't do it via DC current though. Read up on Electromagnetism if you guys are interrested. It's the photons that travel through the air at the speed of light (nb: smaller in air than vacuum). They are the electromagnetic force particle and are responsible for everything from light to microwaves.
bayrider
if i remmber what i saw on TV involved a power supply which created the electric field and the computer, lamp, monitor etc had a special device to receive the electricity... he said something about the particles in the air vibrating really rapidly...
