Wireless Electricity?

Recommended Posts

i'd like to see some sort of wireless power source. just imagine how our society would change...

though i don't know much about electricity or magnetism or those things (at least not enough to have any ideas ) so i don't know what to think... :(

regarding the thing about microwaves in satelites being beamed down to earth...

so what about the consequences of those microwaves ripping through the atmosphere on the way down?

and about this idea in general... i have to agree with giantsnyy2002. i think our society is already depndant enough on electricity. if we start making it wireless and even easier to lose, then we are in big trouble. i live in toronto, where the big blackout in august hit hard. all of southern ontario was without power for 2 days. its amazing to see how quickly everyone freaks out when we dont have elctricity. we should keep something like electricity in a safe, controlled medium of transport.

wireless electricity was invented decades ago.. by a man named Nicola Tesla (ever heard of a tesla coil?) well he was obsessed with electricity and actaully created a power station for a test based on it... some people think an explosion in sibera that destroyed a huge area (talking tens of square miles) was caused by him testing it thousands of miles away... because the explosion happened at the same time he was starting the test.... but yes wireless electricity did exist, but isn't used today because of things like radio interfearance and other communication problems caused by it

This is what Tesla wanted to do, needless to say he never worked it out. Of course, why bother with wireless electricity when we have the sun? We just need highly efficient solar cells that can store lots of energy for a long time.

Tesla made huge progress. He was cut off from funding (ironically by an electric company) because the idea of free wireless electricity wasnt a good business plan. The government confiscated most of his work.

I think this idea leads to a more efficient source of power. Why would Electricity source have to be seperate from the application IF we advance in technology enough, we may have a brilliant, small, yet efficient power source which wouldn't need to be seperate.

Anyway, I don't think it's impossible, but If you could elaborate on a specific application for it, it would be easier to comment. I think technology isn't moving towards wireless electricity, just smaller Power Sources.

/me can just picture every piece of iron, cobalt and nickel turning into an electro magnet when they get into that radius....

Well...... electro magnets need a wire wrapped around them with power, but I wonder if you would with this?

Meh... it's late, I can't think.

I think what we need here is innovation - Why not build solar cells into the back of laptop screens (heck - why not into the LCD itself!?) to prolong battery life. No power source? Just sit in a sunny position and battery life is extended somewhat!

the seabeck effect isnt the worst idea.. but it requires heating and cooling to create electricity

maybe something similar to a mini hot water system to heat and a pasive phase change to cool

but god only knows

yea, go sit in a sunny position with a LCD screen and tell me how good that works ;) remember LCD is very hard to see in bright light... especialy sun light

I have a Panasonic electric shaver which recharges wirelessly through electromagnetic induction.

The charging base has no metal contacts or anything of that sort, it's just a plastic box. All you do is put your shaver on it or near enough and it will start charging. It charges real fast, too - one hour and it's full. :D

a few ideas that i thought/know about

altus mentioned induction, inducting current flow in nearby circuits, it is how trafficlights work, how many chargers work

to power everything in a room (this may not work, however, its an idea that oculd be adapted)

have a really big coil around a room, any devides inside would have a small current flow in their circuits, however, tv screens and stuff would be, less than happy

you could use sound or electromagnetic waves that are outside of human hearing/sight, to power the laptop, have a converter inside the laptop for example, convert the light into electricity

look for a device known as an Ion Gun, i have the circuit diagrams for one, can light lightglobes and stuff from up to 20' with no contact

The SplashPad charges devices with a "SplashModule" wirelessly up to one cm away from the pad. Supposedly devices with SplashModules should be coming out next year. The pad uses an electromagnetic field. Here's a link to their site and a pic:

perpetual motion...

was a special on the discovery channel, if perpetual motion is achieved from a machine or contraption, efficiecy of 100% and up of power can be achieved. they showed various devices from different inventors showing off their machines. and had interviews with scientists and what not that say it is legit and otherwise. they talked about all this gonvernment conspiricies and stuff... anyways

they showed this 1 contration of a ball that has been going in a circle for 3 years... and it looks pretty legit. if perpetual motion can be achieved, limitless free energy can be created.

yep, he was still trying to find a way to continue his research when he died

I've ever heard of the study of wireless power long ago. There was someone imagined using laser to transport power without wire. But laser is dangerous with high energy...

I heard that was a reaction of anti-matter.
