uiop
I have Remote Desktop, not installed yet though. I was going out of the country for a while, and i was wondering if I can use this software to access my computer here in the US while I'm abroad. Does it let you control any computer by IP over the internet or only LAN? thanks
kairon
Over IP I think. You just gotta be open to outside connections and connect to your IP address directly (nothing like 192.168.*.*).What is so good about ARD that VNC can't do?
NeoMayhem
It is mainly a LAN based app, but it does work over the internet. I would just use VNC for internet use though, it is free and uses less bandwidth so it will be faster ;)

cpugeniusmv
is VNC secure though? ... what do you guys say about leaving my mac in the DMZ zone ... is it safe? if you put the computer in the DMZ, i would recommend running a software firewall on it. Japlabot
excuse me for asking, but what is DMZ?
wprigjoigj3i40jhgi0435ejh Veteran Posted December 7, 2003 Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2003 DMZ is a setting in most firewalls that will allow you to place a single computer outside of your firewall. This computer would be prone to any kind of attack by anyone. This computer basically is no longer protected by the firewall in any way.
SFNE Freak
If you're going to use VNC do the following: System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall New... - Port name: VNC (or anything) - Port number, range, or series: 5900-5902 Go to your router control panel and add port forwarding for that series (5900-5902) along with the IP of your computer (192.168.xx.xx). You should then be able to type the IP of your modem into VNC with :5900 or the other two ports at the end and connect. Sorry if this doesn't work but that's how it works with Snapperhead (desktop picture-taking software) for me. If you're more specific about your router brand somebody could give more detailed instructions.
uiop
that sounds just about like what I needed, thanks SFNE Freak!
